Hi Fellows.

 

Does anyone have a definitive list of all pre-code horror,crime & war titles please, or can anyone direct me to where I may find them listed in one place?

Great list - I imagine War and especially Crime would be even more extensive. And then there are the "horror" books that don't neatly fir into one category or the other - not just horror themed crime books, but books with early horror host tales like Yellowjacket, hybrid issues of 50s titles like the last issue of Youthful's Gunsmoke, the Quality hero books that veered into horror in the early 50s, and Star publications that indicate horror stories on the covers but with more pedestrian interiors. It can be an equal challenge listing War books - as both the earlier issues of Rangers and pretty much the entire Wings run from Fiction House could fit into that category, though I think for most collectors pre-code war really starts with the war comics boom that came out of the Korean conflict. While pre-code crime didn't really explode until 1947, most consider CDNP#22 (1942) to be the first crime book, differentiating it from earlier publications like Detective Comics in that the protagonists were the criminals not the detectives, but then where does that leave later 50s era crime books that feature private eyes? One of things that is both fun and frustrating with Golden Age/Atom Age books is figuring out what books fall into exactly what genre.

 

To the OP, for further exploration into these topics, I suggest picking up the run of the Tales to Terrible to Tell fanzine put out by NEC in the early 90s - easily available on ebay.
