But that in essence is the thing that bugs me. If you can't quantify it, how do you claim it's rare.

well, "rare" is subjective, it has no quantifiable definition ...sure, gerbers and OPG have defined it, but that hardly restricts the rest of us

 

i don't have much trouble calling some of those 9.8s of mainstream SA and BA books of which there are only a few out there "rare". certainly in the slab they are rare!

 

personally, i prefer to say "hard/tough to find in this grade". rare/scarce sounds amateurish.

"Rare/scarce" sounds amateurish only because it's been whored out by every maroon with something to sell. It depends, then, on whose mouth the words come out of. If Rich Evans says it, then yeah, you can take that to the bank.

 

Some no-name on eBay? Yeah, no.
