Welcome to the first ever Survivor Series for Silver Age DC Superhero comics! Round 4

The goal is to determine the greatest Silver Age DC Superhero cover of all time. We will be voting off our 30 least favorite covers from the list provided.

If you hover your mouse over the thumbnail picture, you can see the name and issue number of the comic. Click on the thumbnail if you wish to see the full-size scan.

The poll is at the bottom of this post.

Let's have lots of chit chat as the rounds progress. :gossip:

This is an 11-round marathon. These rounds will last 2 days each. We'll vote off 39 in round 1, 30 in round 2, 30 in round 3, 30 in round 4, 30 in round 5, 20 in round 6, 10 in round 7, 5 in round 8, 2 in round 9, 1 in round 10, and then the final showdown to crown our champion. :acclaim:

I'll repeat once more, please vote for your 30 least favorite covers here.

Interesting facts about round 3:

  • All 7 Batman books were voted off, plus 5 of 8 Detectives left as well.

  • 6 of the 8 Superman books were voted off.

  • 8 books had only 1 vote against them: Brave and the Bold 44, Green Lantern 61, Mystery In Space 55, Green Lantern 40, Showcase 14, Showcase 17, Showcase 19, and Showcase 23. The books in bold have had 1 vote against in back to back rounds. No books had zero votes against.

Thanks for all this effort, Andy. I still feel the DC silver age output is LOADED with great covers. It's going to be a tough selection after the next round. GOD BLESS...

Someone keeps voting for one book only. doh!

Please read the instructions and vote off your 30 least favorites! Please!! :wishluck:

Andy

I couldn't reach 30. I think I voted off 25 or so. The rest I really do love, and thus would hate to unfairly pull down.

Well, 25 is much better than 1, but I still don't understand why folks would only vote for 25 if they can't choose any more. Does that mean you won't be participating in any following rounds? I certainly hope not. Next round we are voting off 30 again, do your best to pick 30. (thumbs u

I just find this too difficult, takes too much energy and time scrolling up and down to click on rejects, and worse, on the images to enlarge them to read the issues numbers. Sorry, I know Im a killjoy, but cant this be laid out in an easier to use manner? and forgive my laziness, Im not getting a pad and paper to take notes.

cant the button to click be NEXT to the images somehow?

It's not the authors fault its the poor polling feature limitations built into the forums.

It would be easier if the "master poll" was split into multiple polls within each round thread by genre or comic title leading to more distinct and significant rounds that pit title vs. title and/or genre vs. genre rather than just "dump thirty issues" type polls.

I know this is just a fun poll, but the term "favorite" is so broad that I won't be surprised at whatever the top 10 will be: best action cover vs most iconic vs familiarity vsI gotta have one representation of my favorite title vs I'm the only one who would vote against this cover so why bother vs get my point?

Don't get me wrong; overall I enjoy this & appreciate TGH's effort. I guess I just felt like vocalizing what I'm sure others are thinking.

To make up for this unintentional downer, my guess of the top 10 (in no order):

B&B #28 - personally prefer #30

Supes #199 - first race...duh?

Flash #123 - Crisis intro/ 1st GA x-over

SC #61 - cosmic...and cosmically funny

GL #73 - I think the silhouette may beat out #8 or #40, depending on how many female voters

SC #22 - hype

JLA #21 - if enough GA voters; if not, then #9

SC #4 - nuff said

MIS #82 - coolness factor

Andy, if you're worried my picks may unfairly affect voting, feel free to delete. I'll understand; just trying to stir up interest here. And thanx again.

Rick

I really don't care how iconic or important a book is, I'm only looking for great cover artwork. Personally, I don't think Superman 199 , Supes Flash race is very good. The idea is cool, but the cover......blah :P

Funny how tastes differ. I love that cover! I love the pose of the guy with the starting gun, it's perfect Infantino, and the little JLAers in the background are great too. And Atom sitting on the 'Starting Line" sign? So cool.

Judging by the voting.....that one may be bye bye after this round :gossip:

It is difficult and does take energy and time, scrolling up and down to click on the ones you don't want. For me, I don't have to click on the image to enlarge it to read the issue number. If I put my cursor over the image, I can see the picture details, with the issue name and number, at the bottom of the screen. I think it was sckao that said he couldn't read it as he was using a mac. If you're using a PC, I don't see why this wouldn't work, and it would ultimately help in the "choosing your covers to vote off" chore.

I wish that I could have the buttons beside the images, but as Subliminal pointed out, that's not an option with the polling features that come with the UBB boards. I could have a poll for each and every issue, and ask you guys to vote for 30 to leave the competition, but I would have no control over the poll. Folks could vote off every cover offered, if they wanted to. To top it all off, the amount of work to create 100 separate polls instead of one with 100 comics would be :insane: So, as it stands, that's not an option.

I don't use a pad and paper, myself. I am constantly scrolling up and scrolling down. Not ideal, but it's the price you pay to play.

JLA_all_the_way, your picks are not going to affect how the voting goes. I mean, just look at the books you chose. :roflmao:

as Showcase 79 was voted off - i guess the forum doesn't like well-drawn images of beautiful women against a gorgeous green background - i'm out of this thing.

thanks for the hard work though! :foryou:

I just don't see how people are voting off Superman #199 when there are certainly many inferior covers still on the list. Not saying it should be the best, but come on, some of the later GL covers, the Brave & Bold JLA covers, early JLA covers, early Flash covers, early Showcase covers, some of the Mystery in Space covers and some of the Sea Devils covers just don't match up.
