SATURDAY, JUNE 5th

 

12 NOON

21ST CENTURY WEBCOMICS

As we move into the second decade of the 21st century, webcomics are growing in number and cover diverse subject matter. What are the benefits of creating webcomics vs printed comics? What are the dominant formats and styles? Do creators generally work alone or with a partner(s)? What determines scheduling? A casual discussion with some of Toronto’s finest webcomics creators, including Tara Tallan (Galaxion), Eric Kim (Streta) and more!

 

1pm.

THE ZEN OF INKING- with Ernie Chan

Watch bronze age comics master Ernie Chan demonstrate an inking technique that he became renowned for in the 70’s and 80’s. Ernie worked collaboratively with legend John Buscema on Conan and went on to pencil Batman, Doctor Strange, Claw the Destroyer and Powerman. Ernie practices a classically based technique with its roots in the pulp artists and book illustrators of the early 20th century. A rare chance to learn from one of the finest.

 

2pm.

DRAWING FOR IMPACT- Creating a Comic Book Cover with Tim Bradstreet

An industry veteran with hundreds of covers to his credit, illustrator Tim Bradstreet will discuss his award winning technique for designing and composing an eye catching comic book cover. Attendees will learn how to successfully incorporate both imagination and photo reference to full effect.

 

3pm.

Greg Rucka- A NOVEL APPROACH

Before Greg Rucka entered the comics scene and became an in demand scribe, he had already carved out a career as a crime fiction novelist. Find out from the man himself how he balances a career in both areas of writing and how one complements the other.

Greg will discuss in detail his approach to writing the comic book -script and give pointers to attendees.

 

4pm

SHOPTALK- A Roundtable of Contemporary Comics Pencillers.

These four hot artists are putting the punch back into superheroics with their explosive pencil stylings. Listen to them explain their working methods and find out what it takes to make your mark in the mainstream. Panelists include Barry Kitson, Francis Manapul, Phillip Tan and Khoi Pham.

 

SUNDAY, JUNE 6th

COMIC BOOK BOOTCAMP with Ty Templeton

Watch Toronto comics impresario Ty “The Guy” Templeton as he performs the 50 minute “nutshell” version of his celebrated Comic Book Bootcamp course. Ty will cover the concept of talent and why it is B.S., importance of narrative flow and foolproof methods for creating writing pitches.

A FULL PALLETTE with Richard Isanove

When Marvel needs a colourist to collaborate with big guns like Joe Quesada, Jae Lee and Adam & Andy Kubert they turn to this man. His credits include top books like the Dark Tower series, Wolverine: Origins and Ultimate X-men. Join award winning artist Richard Isanove as he breaks down his procedure for colouring a comics page.

Jeff Lemire- BRUISERS, BRAWLERS AND INVISIBLE MEN

Graphic novelist Jeff Lemire has crafted an engaging personal mythos with the frequent backdrop of small towns and country living. Follow one of the most innovative young voices in the industry as he talks about his roots and how they have shaped his artistic vision.

Chris Sprouse- FROM PANEL TO PAGE

One of the best artists in the industry working today, Sprouse is a genius at storytelling whether it be intimate character conversations or world shattering conflicts. Enjoy this lecture as Chris explains his process from idea sketches to inked page.
