Because he plays a good bad guy.

 

Actually that is true. It's just that that is all he does, and he seems to crop up as the baddie in half the films I've seen that require such an archetype (even ones where you assumed the lead baddie ought to be American, like Kick Azz).

 

Guess he's taken over from the classier Alan Rickman as the obligatory Hollywood English villain.
