Went with the wife to look at houses we can't afford last weekend. Found a nice 3500sf six-bedroom house on 14 acres with two brand new horse barns, a guest cottage, the works...

 

Asking price: $785,000

 

Which is actually quite reasonable for the area,

 

What wasn't reasonable were the property taxes. $3,384. Per year. 893frustrated.gif

 

Any other state in the country would be pulling $14K or more out of that piece of dirt. The property tax rate for that district is $13.65 per thousand, which would be around $10,700. But there was a law passed 10 years ago that says the valuations on the tax rolls can only increase 5% per year. Which of course sends property values skyrocketing. Why buy a $700,000 house with a $15K annual tax bill when you can buy a $785,000 house with a $3400 bill? Gee, I spend an extra $85K and save $350K over the life of my mortgage. Hmmm... tough call...

 

So guess what? Next year that piece of property will be worth $850,000! Because the tax bill will have only gone up to $3500 and even at $850K that's still a bargain investment!

 

Ownership by out-of-state investors is growing faster than kudzu. And it's no wonder. Gee, should I buy a rental house here in town as an investment? Or should I buy one up in Oregon and save myself $8K in property taxes while charging the same rent? Hmmm... 893frustrated.gif

 

Harrison Ford lives about 25 miles from here. Maybe if we're lucky he'll pull an Arnold and run for governor... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Actually, I wouldn't mind checking out the Black Orchid too. I have Skreemer and Prop. Player. Are you still doing the "buy your soul" deal at the shop? We had a conversation awhile back and you had mentioned you tried it. I really didn't care for the book that much, although I must say, the more I think about it, I'd like to try the same thing. Just to see if people would really do it (most won't, I take it?).

One of my former lackeys carries a binder with him everywhere he goes... In it are five or six different kinds of stationery with the soul contracts on them... Also in the binder are around 220 souls he has purchased... 893whatthe.gif

 

Last time I saw him, he offered me 50 souls for a beat-up Hulk 181... It was tempting... but I passed. Most of the souls he offered were of low value... sumo.gif

 

As a Vertigo man you should definitely pick up the new Swamp Thing that starts next week. I just read it while cataloguing these trades and it is some good... thumbsup2.gif
