Could a R rated Batman movie work?

55 posts in this topic

Batman is a vigilante if you want to argue semantics.

You can assume what you like, and I don't think I've ever read any 'crazy ninja Batman'.

Really most super heroes are vigilante's aren't they? Unless they are employed by some government or private agency.

Yes and I think Boozad knows this.

If you think I'm going to descend into a 'you don't know what I think' argument don't hold your breath because it's obvious you don't.

And can you please explain how a movie with a more adult orientated Batman would be sad, whereas the main medium he appears in has been doing it for years but isn't sad?

I find THAT sad as well. I don't expect my superheros to mature with me. Is it any surprise that sales are as bad as they are?

Batman doesn't need to be an R rated movie. The Jokers Pen trick in the Dark Knight was as shocking as any death in R rated movies. A great film is a great film no matter what the rating. It is also hard to define what a R rated movie is. I Mean look at the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for example. In graphic terms it's violence is very tame, the deaths are not very graphic (compared with say Saw etc) but in tone is very harsh. It gets it's R rating because of it's raw intensity (in fact it was banned in the UK). Would it be banned or given an R rating if made today, I doubt it. would be any less powerful, NO. does it suffer from the lack of graphic violence No. I honestly think great dark films use techniques that keep the visual and graphic elements of the violence to a minimum while making the audience feel the tension. These films, when put in the context of a comic book world, should still be able to live within the PG 13 classification.

Oh and I agree with Gav on this. Batman is not a super hero. He needs to be dark and purcieved as A vigilante anti hero in any comic/film/TV format he is in. That's not to say he can't be put forward in a different tone, ala the orignal TV show but I feel all in all it they are two different characters.

I dont know how much merchandising you can do with an R rating. Or if McDonalds will create "toys" for an R rated movie.
lol Very good point!

I find it funny that back in the late 80's early 90's it was a boom time for R rated toys by Kenner ( Robocop, Aliens, Predator, Terminator) I even remember a Rambo action figure. :insane:

It's kind of sad that a character that at the very least was created to be all ages is even considered to be in an R rated movie. :(

What's so sad about it?

Characters change over time... Batman is a dark character, so this can be exaggerated appropriately.

I find it sad, I'm not saying you have to as well. If you've been reading this thread, I really shouldn't have to explain again why I feel this way.

And of course the most famous figure ever made from a R rated movie

What are those things running these days? That's one toy I wouldn't mind owning.

I dont know, after watching that 1966 Batman movie, i think it would be best to skip the R rating and go straight to gay porn (shrug)

If the fanboys have their way that doesn't seem too far off does it?
