5 copies of Secret War #1...

My LCS had about 60 copies left as of last Thursday and about 25-30 on Monday (guess they sold a bunch over the weekend). I can understand how certain shops, particularly in non-big metro areas, may have been caught under-ordered, but let's not kid ourselves - in aggregate, there are a ton of pristine copies of this and every other hot new #1 issue out there. I now have 7 copies of SW #1 and 6 copies of Conan #1 and I'm not even a hoarder or Modern specialist like Darth! I wonder how many copies of these he's stashed away. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

anyway, gene, what'd you think of Capt America/Falcon #1?

Will read it tonight...the art looks too 1990s for my taste, but at least it's not that quasi-manga 893censored-thumb.gif like in the new Alpha Flight #1. I flipped through that book and put it back on the rack in disgust. Looks absolutely atrocious. Judging from the full stack of copies on display at my LCS, it doesn't look like it's exactly flying off the shelves here. But then again, neither was Secret War #1 until everybody heard how hot it was and swooped in the past few days to scoop up all the unsold copies.

Amen to that.

As a Canadian I'm morally offended by how awful that book looked.

OK, some thoughts after reading todays books:

Thanos: Very good! It seems even without Starlin that the book will be smart and appealing.

Supreme Power: Best read of the day - two thumbs up! JMS just keeps me coming back for more (too bad he can't write Spider-man the same way).

Superman/Batman: Nice filler issue - see my post in the General section about the CGC reference in the story.

Captain America & Falcon: OK, the art does suck, but the writing is good. I may give it another issue or two to see if I can continue to enjoy while ignoring the bad.

Alpha Flight: What the #%*& did I just read? If I was Canadian, I think I would be insulted...

Thor: Finally, the return of Mjolnir!

Spider-man Marvel Age: Just to see what it was - and after I saw the typo on page #2 and that the story is an old rehash, I set it aside. Typos should never happen in a well edited book.

Did anyone see if the Avengers/Thunderbolts TPB come out today? My store didn't have it.

Notes:

Mark Millar's The Unfunnies #2 Issue #1 was the most outrageous non-porno comic I've ever read. Issue #2 was merely insane and disturbing. Millar must be slipping. All that Marvel work has turned him into a wimp.

Authority Vol 2 #10 Maybe it's a hangover from the well-written Coup D'Etat series, but I actually enjoyed this issue. I've been coasting along with this series for the whole of volume #2. It's been "okay" but nothing to write home about. This issue was the best from the current team and the whole "Authority takes over the USA" storyline has me hooked.

Plastic Man #4 Best issue so far. Kyle Baker rules.

Superman Batman #7 Enjoyable. I'm not in love with the art, but it works for what it is.

Swamp Thing #1 Super-cool. I'll definitely be sticking with this title after a first issue like that. Almost a sellout at my LCS, which was nice to see.

Supreme Power #8 I've enjoyed this series, but I really felt like it was all build-up and no payoff. I guess we're in the middle of the payoff now smile.gif Great stuff.

Thanos #7 I'm SO happy that Giffen and Lim worked out this well. I so enjoyed Starlin's run and I get such a kick out of the character I was really bummed when he went off the book. If they keep it up like this I won't feel any letdown whatsoever.

I dunno. The Falcon always struck me as too "Foghorn Leghorn" to be a serious hero. What kind of a man walks around in a feathered outfit like that? If I were a villain, I'd burst out laughing if a dude in feathers tried to stop me.

Picked up Capt America/Falcon and thought it was a fun read. I like the Bart Sears style and love that he's working on a marquee character.

Seeing Ron Lim on a cosmic book like Thanos again after years was wonderful as well. Loved it!

I really enjoyed seeing Lim back in the picture. Giffen did a great job handling the exchange between Death and Thanos. Nice stuff.

I actually like the Bart Sears art. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea... and it is exaggerated... but I liked it.

I read it last night. Didn't really mind the artwork, though I thought it was far from Sears' best. Priest's story is what bugged me. One of the critics on TheFourthRail.com rated the book 2 out of 10 because the characterization was so bad. I agree. The initial Cap sequence was totally out of character for him as was Falcon's first appearance in the book.

Furthermore, I found it to be laughable that Cap would be strolling around Cuba in full uniform and shield with only a jacket and baseball cap as a "disguise". I am having a big problem with this new wave of uber-realism in Marvel comics, whereby real people and real current events (in this case, Gitmo and the terrorist scumbags - oops, I mean "political prisoners" - being held there) are mixed in liberally with spandexed characters. I think the Marvel Universe needs to be one step removed from the real world so the reader can suspend his/her disbelief. When that step is removed, and these characters wearing their underwear on the outside are juxtaposed with real world elements ripped from the headlines, too often I think it just falls flat, as it did in this issue.

I didn't have that much of a problem with it Gene (at least not as much as I do have a problem with the silliness going on in Captain America's Marvel Knights title), but since I don't want to spoil it for anyone that actually does want to read it, there's obviously a major reason why spandex clad Captain America is wandering around Cuba flaunting his costume and shield - one that is somewhat revealed at the end of the issue.

My problem is the timing. He's using "24" style time reports to show the passage of time, but he's got two major timelines running - one that is supposed to be "now" in Cuba as Cap looks for the Falcon, and the other is "then" a few hours before the start of the book back in NYC as Steve Rogers tries to figure out why the Falcon went into Cuba to free a political prisoner.

Other than that, I'm more than pleased to see Sears back at Marvel doing what he does best.

I picked up another 5 copies of Secret War #1 and another 4 issues of Conan #1 from the same shop on Monday (2 days ago). Would have bought more, but I only wanted copies that would definitely grade 9.6/9.8. thumbsup2.gif

Gene, Wannabe Modern Speculator tongue.gif

Am I also to assume that you must have picked up multiple copies of the Superman sketch issues since the LCS's around here are already out of stock and it's only Thursday! 893whatthe.gif

When does JLA/Avengers 4 & 1602 8 come out?

Same time Spider-Man/Blackcat #4 and Ultimates #13......

NEVER

"During a signing facilitated by Dynamic Forces held at the Forbidden Planet location in London on Saturday, writer Mark Millar confirmed that Ultimates Volume 2 #1 would be at least a month late, and would not ship in April as originally solicited. A May or even June start is now a possibility."

"Millar was also showing pages of The Ultimates #13 at the signing, which many fans described as being worth the wait, incredibly detailed, and as good as the first twelve issues – combined – in terms of quality."
