A question for UK members

My nephew is going to be going to school in London this spring. I'm sure he'll spend more time in pubs and dingy basements than in class, but he asked about bringing some comics and setting up in a flea market type setting.

Would it be okay for an American on a student visa to do this, and would it be worthwhile to ship over a dozen or so boxes of SA/BA readers to sell on weekends.

Let me say I'm sure it would be a violation of his visa, but would anyone check or care? He's already got a few gigs lined up playing in some coffee houses, off his youtube vids.

There's a monthly 'show' in London that is little better than a flea market...

A table will probably cost around £40 for the day.

There are Sunday markets all over...Camden, Spitalfields...but I suspect the cost will be higher and the trade lower. Can't say for certain, though, so he might want to check them out.

However, it's these sort of venues that have a greater chance of causing problems, as there are checks made for stolen goods and bootleg stuff. Although I doubt Immigration will be doing the rounds, a few questions from Customs or the local constabulary and it might get awkward.

Not sure it's economically viable to freight the books over and then expect to sell them quickly, as there's a lot of that stuff about in the U.K.. I wouldn't recommend anything but the Royal National show as other markets in London don't focus on comics enough to bring the punters in.

If his books are priced competitively enough, your nephew should do okay at the National Mart although it'll take at least 4 or 5 shows to gain customer confidence and to get the prices correct for that market. It's worth a shot, though.

.

A table was £50 to £55 when I last sold there 3 or 4 years ago.

We used to get mate's rates. :baiting:

Can you pass that entitlement on to Shadrochs nephew? :baiting:

I said used to. After all the grief we've given Rob down the years, I'm not certain he'd give us a booth in the toilets. ;)
