Valiant resurgence? What the heck is going on?

60 posts in this topic

Mr Valiant Speculator made the point that 20K-100K is "hard to find", but have you checked out the print runs on current books? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

Yep... too bad they're not 200,000+ like Byrne X-Men books.

Then they'd be really cheap, right?

Of course, many, many copies (including Pre-Unity books) are also sitting in Diamond boxes or warehouse finds having never been unpacked. grin.gif

That is very unlikely. Those Pre-unitys were hotter than anything at the time. And for more than a year.I've been buying these books for years and there is NOBODY that has come out with any quantity in the last few years that wasn't a player back in the day.

I only say that because that applies to me. thumbsup2.gif

Gee, I'd better check the homeless shelters and drug rehabs for all these "Valiant Playah's", to see if they're sitting on old stock. 27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

Sorry it ain't gonna happen and when you do,no more than 25% are in Near Mint condition.

That may be the case with the much more common (and worthless) post-unity books.

But don't kid yourself here, the Pre-Unity book were HIGHLY speculated on and hoarded by collectors, and I am betting that the vast majority are still in prime condition.

The term Pre-Unity wasn't even used until these books got hot months later. How is a book with a print run of 20-50k a book that is HIGHLY speculated?

Somehow...

Somehow, through all the hatred.

...all the loathing.

...all the speculators who lost their shirts.

...all the well-wishing helpers advising people to avoid Valiant like the plague.

...all the high grade copies that are evidently so easy to find.

....Somehow... the ungraded books still sell for $5 to $50 on Ebay.

It's a good thing all you comic community protectors have been doing your part...

You DO realize that these Valiant print runs were vastly understated, and that Shooter sent a bunch out the "back door".

Of course, that refers to the early, "low print run" 27_laughing.gif copies, and not the real late Valiants, which are scarce since no one wanted to buy them.

Bought by speculators and not collectors. confused-smiley-013.gif

The books got hot because collectors were reading them. There was no reason for anybody to be speculating on a new company back then after so many dealers got waxed from the independent crash before then. When the buzz started it was almost a year after the company was putting out superhero books. Then the sportscard guys got ahold of it and that was that.

Got proof of this? Not contesting what you're saying, but I'd like to know how you know this.

If believing this makes you feel better about overpaying for the books then good luck to you.

I am not bashing Valiant books or their collectors. I read all the books back in the day and thought the stories/characters were great. I would just caution anyone who jumps back in to buying these books at over-inflated price levels. Especially mistakenly thinking they are somehow 'rare' in HG.

Rare HG...This CGC grading service is all hype no matter what genre anyway. This is a sellers market.Read the boards comparing this to the coin market and the big crash after the grading came into play.Valiants or Silver to Golden age...if you got any HG then sell it now. It's ALL going to be cheaper in a few years.

As many of you know, I tend to move a LOT of books, and therefore, have to be continually on the look out for new stock. The following Valiants are NEVER found in grade at any shows I go to:

Harbinger 0-4

Solar 1 and 60

Rai 3, 4

Magnus 64

Anybody who thinks these books are easy to find in high grade, please send all of the ones you have to me. I'll buy all of them at $5 each if they are in 9.4 or higher. EVERY SINGLE ONE. I'll be here waiting, and I'm not going to be cutting many checks.

Thanks for the comments... I agree with you.

However, I think the $2,000+ for RRP books pose a bigger threat.

$300+ for Ultimate Spider-man...

Anytime hundred dollar bills accompany brand new books, there's a danger.

When Valiant was brand new... obviously, it was dangerous. We saw what happened.

No one ever plopped down $2,000+ for ANY Valiant book.

Valiant is a dead universe from 10+ years ago with a small, loyal following.

That sounds like the perfect scenario for me...

You can keep your "latest greatest" re-boot versions of 30 to 65 year old heroes.

I'll take the "dead guys" from a dozen years ago. cloud9.gif

Hell, I'll pay $10 for 9.4 or better copies of any of those pre-Unity issues. PM me instead of Donut. tongue.gif

No joke. Five bucks. sleeping.gif

I'm not sure about pre-unity issues, but there is this porn guy at the LA show each month who puts up boxes upon boxes (about 5 long boxes) of Valiant books for 25 cents each to legitimize his appearance at a comic show, even though his main sale is porn.

MMMMMMMmmmmmm...porn.
