Valiant resurgence? What the heck is going on?

60 posts in this topic

I'll be honest with you. I like the Valiants and am willing to spend good money on the pre-Unity stuff. But if I've got several boxes in front of me, some filled with pre-Unity Valiants and the others filled with porn, I sure as hell am not going to be looking at the comics.

I'll buy all of them at $5 each if they are in 9.4 or higher. EVERY SINGLE ONE. I'll be here waiting, and I'm not going to be cutting many checks.

No joke. Five bucks. sleeping.gif

I'm not sure about pre-unity issues, but there is this porn guy at the LA show each month who puts up boxes upon boxes (about 5 long boxes) of Valiant books for 25 cents each to legitimize his appearance at a comic show, even though his main sale is porn.

MMMMMMMmmmmmm...porn.

What do you have against Valiants? Seriously - what's your problem here? I don't understand your irrational hatred of this comic line. Some people like them, and some people will pay money for certain issues. Why do you care, and, more to the point, why do you slam people who do?

Good question, and we went over this before.

When I started to see the Wizard hype machine heat up, the speculating on new Valiants, and rumors of print run-fixing started emerging, that was really my sign to get the heck out of new comics, Valiants included.

I basically sold all of my non-Marvel Moderns (90% Valiant) for store credit, and then pushed that into Bronze. As more time went by, the blood started to flow pretty badly and there was definitely a tinge of anger present in my LCS. They had been in business forever, but due to their stupidity in falling for the speculative grift, the store closed down in 1995. This was the first of many LCS closings in that era, and I'm just glad I got all my store credit out.

So for better or for worse, I associate Valiant, Wizard and their hype-mongering publishers as the main villains in the whole 90's fiasco. They didn't catch me, but I didn't like having to mail-order my comic supplies. mad.gif

Maybe you should stop blaming Valiant. Really... think it over...

According to dozens of knowledgeable guys on this board... Valiant wasn't enemy #1.

Of course not, there were stores selling Valiants, dealers over-ordering Valiants, insufficiently_thoughtful_person speculators buying cases of Valiants, Wizard hyping Valiants....

Trust me, I realize there were more culprits than just Valiant the publisher.

How about sticking every other comic publisher in the space you put Valiant. The pre-unity books as a whole are getting more money raw than almost every other book from that time period. These are books that came out before the over ordering, the speculators, and the Wizard hype.Stick with your Bronze that is such a better investment 27_laughing.gif...SUCKER

My, my, my, you're a real expert on comics, right?

How could I ever do better than to sell all my Valiants (just before the very top-end) for a sizeable chunk of store credit, and then turn that into HG Bronze at sale prices?

I did pretty well considering what happened about a year later. 27_laughing.gif

Ok then Mr.EXPERT...why not sell all of your cherished HG bronze now.People are paying just as stupid prices now for HG bronze as they were for Valiants 10 years ago.Shouldn't you get out now while the gettins' good?Or how about trade them in on the next hottest thing. '80 's Marvel!!!! Surely there's only 2-300,000 of each of those books left around in HG. Go ahead player!!!

This isn't about speculation, as I sold my Valiants because I despised the direction those hyped-up, speculator-loving Coke Heads were taking the company.

So if someone builds a time machine and changes all the 1970's Marvel books to foil-enhanced, speckle-covered, gold-tipped, platinum-enhanced crapola, then sure I'll sell them off in an instant. thumbsup2.gif

Then please explain to me what you are really in this hobby for.Is it for reading pleasure?I'm sure going out and trading for HG bronze back then was a waste of your credit since all you wanted to do was read the books.Because only a SPECULATOR would get all HG.And you're not one of those type of COKE HEAD collector are you? This whole thread was started about people paying high prices for Valiants. Now it's turned into your total slam (from you) on Valiant.Whats the matter, did you ride the city bus all the way to a convention back in '93 to get your FREE copy of Unity #0 signed by Jim Shooter, and the line got cut off right in front of you? sorry.gif

I find it amusing that you're posting about the resurgence of some crack baby speculative fad back in the 1990's, and calling me names? 27_laughing.gif

I find it annoying that you had to come into this thread and slam everything about it.The guy that started it asked a simple question and you had to bring your F'D up attitude into this whole conversation.I see with all of your postings that you probably, sit on the computer all day and do the same thing to everybody else's boards.GET A LIFE!..Get off the computer and go do something else.Get outside...And walking to work at Burger King and then going to the comic shop to look for high grade Rom back issues doesn't count.

Comickings...

I used to get upset at Joe Collector's negativity towards Valiant on these boards.

Then I read all the other posts he's ever made, and it occurred to me that

when Joe Collector irrationally hates some comics...

that's probably a great recommendation for the rest of us to pick them up.

Just like on Seinfeld...

if everything George ever says is wrong, then the opposite would be right.

Maybe that should be the Valiant collector motto on these boards...grin.gif

"I collect Valiant because Joe Collector told me not to!"

I'LL tell you what killed comics..........

Image and their idea of 10+ variant covers per issue.just look at witchblade and gen 13.

BRAVURA/MALIBU

hell, i don't know anything, just rantin and raving. just sent in a box of rare valiants to cgc..... show me the money

Marvel was the real "variant cover" culprit. Image had its fair share of gimmicks, but its primary problem was that the lack of editorial control basically killed any prospect that the stories would be any good or that the books would come out on time.

I wouldnt buy slabbed copies to speculate on but the books themselves are quite good The pre Unity books under Jim Shooter featured some very good art and literate stories well worth seeking out.

I agree, even several issues from post-Unity are still very good reading.

MOST of the Valiants are only worth buying to read, but a few pre-unity issues seem to command some pretty good dollar I guess due to their rarity with demand.

Will it continue?, who knows, but I sure enjoyed reading most of these Valiant books and hope they come back soon.
