Comic Characters and Your Favorite Artist

36 posts in this topic

I'm sure this has been done before, but why not try it again since new characters and artists hit the scene regularly?

List some of your favorite characters and associate them with the artist(s) you think rendered them the best. This exercise will also date many of us! lol

Feel free to express why you think a given artist is the best at what they do.

Here we go!

SUPERMAN: John Byrne (square jaw, infectious smile, and powerful physique)

HULK: John Byrne

GREEN GOBLIN: Romita Sr. (just classic and rather maniacal-looking)

MEPHISTO: John Buscema (cowardly yet powerful-looking)

CONAN: John Buscema

BATMAN: Neal Adams/ Giordano

GALACTUS: John Byrne (epic and grand, as well as mysterious)

SABRETOOTH: Marc Silverstri (truly savage depiction)

SILVER SURFER: John Byrne (powerful, yet graceful)

IRON MAN: Bob Layton (seemed to be his niche)

JUGGERNAUT: John Romita Jr.

THOR: Jack Kirby and Ron Frenz (what the?!?!?!?)

VENOM: Todd McFarlane (about the only thing I can stand by him...)

SPIDER-MAN: Romita Sr./Jr.

DR. STRANGE: Steve Ditko (his sci-fi/horror influence was a perfect fit)

CAPTAIN AMERICA: John Byrne (same reasons as for Superman - both are ultimate good guys)

THANOS: Jim Starlin

LOCKHEED: Romita Jr.

COLOSSUS: John Byrne (powerful build)

THING: John Byrne (stocky and imposing)

WOLVERINE: Marc Silvestri (makes him look savage and feral when required, much like Sabretooth)

MOON KNIGHT: Bill Sienkewicz

Can you tell grew up in the 80s reading MARVEL? ;)

That should get the ball rolling. (thumbs u

Spidey - Romita Sr (quintessential Spidey, imo)

Conan - Buscema (BWS was good, but the character was made for Buscema)

Fantastic Four - Byrne (circa 1983 or so)

Iron Man - Romita jr / Bob Layton team (best IM art duo ever)

Sgt Rock - Kubert / Heath depending on the day and my mood  (can't pick just one. Heath's work is so clean and smooth and Kubert's is gritty and edgy. Very different from one another and yet they both work so well for the character)

Haunted Tank - Heath (I prefer Heath's work on Jeb and the boys)

Richie Rich - Ernie Colon (my favorite RR artist. E Colon gets no press, which is a shame. He's a fantastic artist)

Teen Titans - George Perez

Thanos - George Perez (I know the popular pick is Starlin, but Perez's Infinity Gauntlet is forever etched into my brain.

Captain America - Mike Zeck (circa early 80's)

Punisher - Mike Zeck

Thor - Jack Kirby (best Thor artist ever, imo)

Alien Legion - Frank Cirocco (After he left, the series just wasn't the same)

Man Thing - Mike Ploog

Dracula - Gene Colon (No one draws the neck biter better)

Bosco, I was going to list HELLBOY, but I decided against it, because few artists have drawn him, or at least on a regular basis. So, I'm going to stick with characters who have been drawn by a myriad of folks.

Sorry HELLBOY, GOON, RICK GRIMES, etc...

John Byrne was good but not that good. Buscema's Surfer was definitive, and I prefer Dale Keown on the Hulk and Barry Smith (or possibly Cary Nord) on Conan.

Apart from that, not bad. Correct call on Mephisto....

Gene Colan and Tom Palmer on Daredevil (rather than Frank Miller).

Warlock, Captain Marvel - Jim Starlin.

Green Lantern - Gil Kane (rather than Neal Adams) because he made that character.

Green Arrow - Neal Adams, because he essentially recreated that character.

The Flash - Carmine Infantino.

I used to be a HUGE BYRNE fan back in the day, but my tastes have changed and become more refined. However, I still LOVE the way he draws (or should say DREW) characters will powerful physiques. I think that was his strength, since everyone he drew was pretty much the same, but with different hair and skin color. lol
