Moondog's "Now Even You Can Afford an Ashcan" Sale!

3 posts in this topic

I was going through some boxes recently and found some loose ashcan covers - the last remnants of approximately 80 covers I once owned. A few months back Hake's sold a Screen Gems ashcan cover for $891 including buyer's premium. They also sold a Here's Howie ashcan cover for $1,139. Here's your chance to own an ashcan cover without paying a buyer's premium!

Many collectors are fascinated with ashcans, but know little about them other than they're expensive. Relatively speaking they are expensive, but when you compare ashcan prices to the prices of recent hot books, they're quite a bargain. Serious collectors who focus on rarity and importance gravitate to ashcans. Now you can own one at a price that's lower than you ever expected.

NOTE: Ashcan covers are covers with no interior. Ashcan covers were created with the intention of creating a full ashcan, but - for whatever reason - were never produced. To read more about ashcans please turn to page 1040 of the 38th edition (2008) of Overstreet's Comic Book Price Guide. The feature is co-written by Mark Zaid and myself, the country's foremost ashcan experts and collectors.

The first public :takeit: gets it. U.S. only. Add $9 for shipping and handling.

Screen Comics ashcan cover. December 1944. Cover art is Boy Commandos 1. Beautiful NM condition with no rips, tears or browning. Nice overall "toning". Approximately 10-12 copies of this cover exist with some in DC's vault. There were 5 different "Screen" titles: Cartoons, Comics, Fables, Funnies and Gems. Clearly DC was protecting themselves from a competitor entering the movie comics field which they eventually did with Real Screen Funnies. $800.

Real Fact Comics ashcan cover. February 1946. Cover art is Boy Commandos 1. Beautiful NM condition and a tad whiter than the others. There are approximately 10 or so of these covers in existence. Ashcans of titles that were actually published are always more popular than those that never quite made the cut. The first issue of Real Fact Comics was published in March 1946, so this ashcan was produced just a month before! $1,000. NOTE: 2 covers available.
