That white crackling area along the spine...

...that seems prevalent with modern books. You know, where the spine folds forming the front and back covers. On some books this fold seems unobtrusive, others it creates a mess.

An an example; I have a few "Wolverine: The End" issues. Fold is a clean, white, straight line along the spine.

Then I have a few "Iron Fist #1" amd "Teen Titans #9" issues where this fold is a mess. It looks like the color is flaking off in areas along the fold.

Anyone know how much these sloppy folds effect grading? Do I need to post in the "Ask CGC"? topic.

I've been wondering this myself. I rather doubt they deduct for it since it's a side-effect of the production process, but it's hard to say. It might be the kind of thing that they drop a book to a 9.9 for.

From my experience, they usually get knocked down to at least 9.6.

More if it's really bad.

Probably the reason 9.6 is the highest grade for Spider-Man #1 Platinum.

That book is tough to find without serious cracking.
