Fred Guardineer Comics Wanted for Museum Exhibition!

17 posts in this topic

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona is currently working on a group exhibition featuring comic artists who have inspired contemporary artist Jon Haddock. Jon has chosen Fred Guardineer, specifically for his “The Blue Tracer” and “The Marksman” stories, as one of those comic artists. Here is a link to a summary of the exhibition, http://smoca.org/exhibit.php?id=209.

Below is a list of specific works that we are looking for either in the form of original drawings, but mostly as comic books.

Military Comics

#10, #8, #7, #6, #5 – “Blue Tracer”

Smash Comics

#47, #43, #48 – “Marksman”

Mystic Comics

#5 - “Moon Man”

Crime Does Not Pay

#52 – “Trigger Happy Durkin”

#53 – “Master of Murder Castle”

#57 – “The Wild Spree of the Laughing Sadist”

National Comics

#17, #19 – “Merlin”

If you have any suggestions on how I can find these comic books, or you have them, please contact me!

Guardineer's early work, while not as refined, is extremely compelling to me.

This is a centerfold from an early Star Comics:

Another early Chesler/Centaur page:

I don't have any shots loaded, but FG's work on Dan Hastings is amongst his best, IMHO.

Those are impressive choices. I think I still have National 18 and CDNP 57 but haven't checked recently.

I think Smash had some terrific covers (Reed Crandall?) and interior art but people have ignored all the great work by

Guardineer, Cole, Gabrielle, Palais and Guardineer (in order as below) and focused on the Lou Fine's Ray issues.

Scans from GAC.
