Guess the CGC grade

29 posts in this topic

I can't make the scan any larger as it is borrowed from another site. Spine wear is worse than it looks in this scan...

What am I missing? Why are we guessing the grade of Trey's slabbed midgrade TOS? (shrug)

Not my book, just amazed it got a 7.0

All this being said, I know a book that doesn't deserve the grade gets through every now and again. But I think the concensus was a 5.5-6.0 on this book.

Does anyone think as time goes on and the graders CGC uses get newer/younger generation, that the CGC grades or standards change?

I've seen a lot of books on here in the last several weeks that we all graded 8-8.5 and came back from CGC 9.2-9.4's.....Has the grade criteria changed and I don't know about it?

It's way too nice for a 5.5. Really it has one area of spine stress that stands out at first look. And a faint short lower corner crease. 7 makes sense, 6.5 too would seem fair. It looks way better than the tomahawk with multiple stress marks that stand out ( I think that was off)

It's not easy to appreciate how good a book is looking at a scan on your screen. Scans can emphasize flaws, because we are used to looking at books in front of us with proper light and proportions. What you point out I've noticed as well; the board members here on average under grade by 1-2 notches. I base that claim on the contest threads I've checked, the results I've seen show few over graders and sometimes 50% of the crowd under grading.

I was going to say a 6.0 before looking at the actual listing...

First thing I thought of though was the Tomahawk book and I think your question about the generational thing is interesting.

Methinks I have more 7.0's in my collection than I realize!!

How can CGC items vary so much?

That looks 5.5/6.0 to me.

Thats the problem with CGC giving gift grades or not being consistent. An amatuer sees this book and says "I have a book that only has half the spine wear of that one, so it must be a 9.0!"

When in fact, it is an actual 7.0 book. And that is why most eBay sellers suck at selling comics.

IMHO
