It looks like I am the only one that was let down by the show.

Sorry I'm late, but I had my dadly duties to perform over the last couple of days including lawn care, lawn mower repair, keeping the kid-o occupied and preparing to destroy on storage and build another in a three day period. That should be hysterical when it happens, I'll start a thread.

I had a pretty extensive list for sketches and signatures despite the weak guest list. I scored three sketches, one of which I have yet to see. I got Matt Kindt to do an awesome FF #1 cover and unbelievably scored a Tony Moore sketch at last! Last year I was #7 one day and #6 the next. For those that don't know, Tony Moore only does five sketches per day. This year, it was a raffle. You didn't win a sketch, you won the opportunity to buy one.

I met Ron Garney and was bummed. He's not the friendliest guy in the world. I approached him while he was sitting alone at his table and looked like he was just spacing out. I asked if he was sketching and he came back with serious attitude saying that he was tyring to but kept getting interrupted. I chose to leave him alone to do his thing.

I had a couple of requests from boardies as well. They didn't go well. Francisco Francavilla arrived late and when I finally found him, his list was full. Cynthia Martin was a no-show as best as I could tell. Cat Staggs did make it to the show but was never at her table. Her assistant was there every time, but no Cat. I also never saw Jeremy Bulloch, Lindsey Wagner, or Daniel Logan. I didn't care that I missed them, but thought it was odd to never see the "featured guests."

The dealers were just odd, too. Lots and lots of toys. This show has always been fantastic in the past for me when it comes to variants that I've missed out on over the course of the year. They are usually abundant and cheap, but this year pickin's was mighty slim. My favorite dealer wasn't there, Dale Roberts was at Mega Con instead! Terry's Comics was there but the books they had that I was interested in were way out of my range. For a mere $12,000 I could have had a nice looking Captain America Comics #1. Tragically, I left my check book at home and even if I had brought it I would have been about $11,750 short.

Bootleg movie guy wasn't there, and he's always there. Another perk of this show is that there are usually abundant statues from all eras and at low prices. Not so this year. The selection was thin and the prices were average. There was an autograph booth that had some questionable materials. James Dean for $500 just seemed way too good to be true.

The costumes seemed pretty few and far between as well. Star Wars was everywhere. A minimum of three Darth Mauls, enough Stormtroopers to take and hold Libya, a bunch of Boba Fett derivatives and a few Jedi. Not a single Darth Vader which I thought was odd. There were a few really cool costumes including Iron Man and War Machine and the big winner as far as I'm concerned was Mr. Freeze. He was just amazing! Apparently he had mics and speakers going in and out of the costume as he had no trouble hearing and being heard.

...but was Knife Guy there? It will hail flaming frogs if they have a comic book convention and there's no Bootleg Guy, Knife Guy, Dragon statue Guy or Porn Guy.

Super sweet sketches though, but it's a shame Garney wasn't the friendliest person :( I know here was high on your list, but I wouldn't want to bother if he said that to me either :kidaround:

Did you get pictures of the Iron Man and War Machine costumes? :D

That MR. FREEZE looked pretty sweet that you posted.

...and LOVE your Moore sketch brother (worship)

Thanks for the kind words Doug. I will do everything humanly possible to be there next year. I really like the KC show, just couldn't miss Megacon with Stan being there.

You know, there are only 12 to 15 major shows in a year. What sense does it make to schedule them on top of each other? It really hurts everyone involved, from the promoter to the dealers to the fans.

That's my thinking and KC took the brunt of the blow this year. Stan Lee is far too big of a draw to compete with.

There were other dealers absent as well, but tragically, I don't recall their names. The show wasn't bad, it just wasn't particularly good. Hopefully next year will be back on track!

While I was hacking away on my posts, I got the scan of my final sketch. This one won't go to CGC, which is fine. It's not exactly what I expected or wanted but it's a nice sketch anyhow.

I asked for his interpretation of this:

I thought since he was a "girlie" artist that he was a good choice to do his interpretation of this cover. I think he took me to mean to do his interpretation of the character.

(shrug)

I neglected to make fun of the quintessential comic book guy.

I had been on the show floor for maybe ten minutes and was just making the rounds and seeing what caught my eye. I got stuck in a traffic jam and was just kind of checking out some statues in a display case when this guy starts shoving his way through to the front.

I missed getting a picture, but it all happened in close quarters anyway.

He was maybe 5'6" to 5'8" and I would guess him to be a minimum of 250 lbs. His hair looked like it had never seen a comb and was fairly long. He was wearing red sweat pants, a Batman symbol t-shirt that was too small five years ago and had only gotten smaller, thick glasses, and a gimpy leg. To top it all off, he was sweating like a whore in church and literally gasping for air. We won't go into the details on the lovely aroma he gave off.

Anyway, he got to the front, quickly scanned the display case, and muttered something under his halitosis ridden breath before shaking his head and pushing his way on through the crowd.

Promise me that if I should ever look and act this way that someone will shoot me.

:roflmao:

Glad I didn't run into that guy!

Yeah, because of the cool stuff I picked up the show wasn't a disappointment for me, but I did notice that 4-5 dealers were not there that I usually buy from (Troy Neely, Leeroy Harper, a couple of guys that bring thousands of books for about $.25 each, and some others).

I missed out on a lot of costumes! Thank you for sharing the extra pictures. Hopefully I can make it to Wizard World in Chicago this year (still waiting for a big St. Louis show). I know there are several small shows in the KS/MO area, but let me know if I am missing out on any others.
