I just don't understand the need to make superheroes grown up. That is like trying to make the muppets grown up. Lets make a muppett movie and see how MS.Piggy and Kermit the Frog get it on.

If this was true, these guys would be reserving a copy of the DVD right now. 27_laughing.gif

Teeheehee, lookit Kermit giving it to miss Piggy - that sow be squealing!! foreheadslap.gif

You really don't think much of people who don't agree with you do you?

And to think... You started a thread about the negativity on these boards... Thank god you don't contribute to that.

And do you watch the Muppets or Looney Tunes anymore? Have you grown past them? Why? Could it be that the stuff that interested you as a kid doesn't quite cut it now?

I believe I said I did enjoy Looney Tunes as an adult. I never really got into the muppets to begin with. I brought these two examples up because the characers were never meant to evolve and mature as it's audience matures. They haven't "grown up" with their audience. They have a specific target audience and they were not created to grow up with their audience. I do not need Superman or Spider-Man or the X-Men experiment with various sexual positions. If I want that, there are better places to go. There seems to be a need for some readers to justify reading comic books by having their favorite character grow up as well. One of the reasons I got out of collecting comic books years ago was the anti-heroe attitude that superheroes were meaningless and useless. After reading Watchmen, you go whats the point of superheroes anymore? Why read another comic book? It's like when William Shatner said to the Star Trek groupies grow up, get a life. It was not a commentary on how Star Trek became irrelevant, but how the groupies lives became identified with the culture. That is happening with comic books. You have a group of readers who want their characters to grow with them as they "mature" in their personal lives. I have no need for Superman to mature with me.

Superheroes have been here for over sixty years entertaining kids for generation. There is a mature line of comic books that catter to those that want to see naked superheroes and extreme violence. I say for comic books to survive, they must have stories that are kid friendly but have an appeal to adults. Successful movies do that. If comic books continue the trend to mature comic books across the line, they will mature themselves out of an audience.

My wife and I grew up around the same time period. I never was really big into Muppets while to her it was a big part of her TV experience growing up. It's funny that you mentioned the DVD. I think we saw a recent Pizza commercial with the Muppets and Jessica Simpson 893frustrated.gif and my wife remarked if there was a DVD out for the Muppet series that would be nice to see if our son would/could get into...somehow I don't think the one with Kermit (played by Ron Jeremy in green bodypaint) giving it to Miss Piggy Deliverance-style was the one she had in mind tongue.gif

Well, christ, we all know heroes don't have sex or swear or make people bleed!!

Once again, super heroes don't exist. thumbsup2.gif

You're correct, however, there was no "super" in my sentence. I thought you made a vow yesterday not to antagonize anyone? (except maybe 3M)

I am a big fan of adult content in comic books for the same reason that I am a big fan of adult content on television. I don't want someone else telling me what I can and cannot see. It should be my choice whether I want entertainment that is suitable for all ages or entertainment that is clearly only for adults.

Comic books are a medium, just as film is a medium and television is a medium. I want product available to me on each of those mediums that ranges from "suitable for 2-year-olds" to "unsuitable for most anyone alive". Anything less than that full spectrum being available to me is censorship. It has to be MY choice which end of the spectrum I choose to experience.

For a long time, you could find porn comics and you could find teen-friendly comics but nothing in between. That has changed, Vertigo being the best and broadest example.

I want books like Vertigo and the MAX line available. I may or may not choose to read them. But I want them available. I want television shows like the Sopranos and The Shield on tv. This last week's episode is a perfect example of why... It wasn't porn. It was gripping television that was clearly only for adults...

Just because I am old enough to watch porn doesn't mean I want that all the time. I also want to see creative product from writers and artists who have a broader palette available to them than what comics were in the 1970s. I want it to be my choice what I see and what I read, and the only way that truly happens is if creators produce products up and down the spectrum...

Why do so many people on a board about comic books keep saying that people need to grow up? They're comic books for chrissakes. With pictures, but they're still books.

I never said there needs to be YOUR superhoeroes in R rated scenes, I said what's wrong with having COMIC BOOKS with mature ratings? Doesn't need to be porno, that's silly and I can go to Japanese stuff for that.

We all know JC doesn't need any logic or believability in his books, because superheroes don't exsist, and while the vocal minority is welcome to their opinions that the rest of us are children because we're snickering at boobies and swears, the fact remains that I'm glad there are [comic] books out there being published with more sophiticated tastes in mind.

The reason this thread got to this subject is because you brought it up with your example of Spider-Man and other heroes having mature relationships. You did not keep it within the context of the Max/Vertigo titles. Within that context, I have no problem with adult comic books. No one on this thread does. You know what you are getting when you purchase those books.

When the subject turns to superheroes, it is different. Taking these characters and maturing them for a mature audience is not going to help comic books. I have not called on censorship or the abolition of the mature line of comics. I am saying that if you take recognised characters and put them in the mature line, the comic book industry would make a grave mistake. All it would do is further shrink the audience it now has as they would move on to other media as it does that much better than comic books.

OK, fair enough. I was using too broad an example there... I guess I'm in 'Houses camp on the censorship thing. I just like having more options...

True that! I like some of the mature stuff like the Fury MAX and Punisher MAX, but like you I am afraid of mature writing and art seeping its way into mainstream titles like it already has in Avengers. In the short term some of us older readers might like the adult content in those mainstream titles, but in the long run it will spell doom for new readership IMHO. If Marvel feels the overwhelming urge to add sex and adult language on a particular Avengers story arc they should just slap a MAX label on it and make it a limited series, but leave the regular Avengers title ALONE so the kiddie-poohs and adults that don't want that stuff can enjoy the it.

Refresh my mind. What was on the first page that would make you a pervert?

The opening scene is The Kids father, filming 2 male prostitutes to play together.
