Luv for the Marvel Fanfare ??

25 posts in this topic

Wife has me painting all the bedrooms as time and budget permit, so I've

been moving longboxes out of 4 into 2 and 3, and getting things spiffy just

to make the wonderful wife happy. After nearly stroking out while cutting

the big bedroom, I sat on the floor near a stack of Marvel Fanfare. I had

never read them. My general impression was always of a "C" title. I carried

them at the store, and did sell consistently. But I've never read them until

recently. Some of the short story split issues are very entertaining with the

limited page count. Quick short little takes. Obviously some better than others

and some the artwork lacked. Again, all in my humble opinion. The artists

and writers list is a who's-who of Marvel in the late 80's. Byrne, Layton,

just to mention two. Impressive list, and quite entertaining stories.

Inventory stories that couldn't be fit in anywhere else.

MF is hit and miss, very often in the same book. It takes a DEDICATED soul to attempt to read all 50 of the original series, much less the later ones.

Epic Illustrated was like that.

25p bargain bin fodder here in the UK. The only issues I have are:

1, 2 - art by Michael Golden

4 - Paul Smith

15 - Barry Windsor-Smith

40 - David Mazzucchelli

41 - Dave Gibbons

Pretty much the same here. And I'm sure some old time dealers have

backstock that is probably in very nice shape.

Marvel started the title to be a showcase of talent. They printed it on higher quality paper with higher quality inks. It started out pretty good, but like all other anthology titles, it ran out of good material and ended up with filler materials. I think I have the full run.

Thanks.

One thing about MF - I see issues for sale and I never know if I should pick up a certain one every time I see it.

Any one feel that there are keys in that run?

no keys. once upon a time #1 was a "hot book"...like in 1984/85. i remember at shows dealers selling them for $5 right next to stacks of X-Men 142s at $5 next to boxes of sharp BA spideys at 50 cents each (other than the Byrne issues)...to put things in context.

i buy the covers/artists I like. I think frank miller has a captain america cover in there.
