Apple Con

6 posts in this topic

if you're referring to this weekend's big apple con... I was there sunday and it was pretty dead.

I saw very little in the room to get excited about. Bob had some nice CGC books and a fine selection of raw books, but nothing I was looking for that day. Ted also had a wide selection, but nothing I was looking for really (bought a CGC 9.2 cap 103). It was pretty much same old, same old... there wasn't that much around to be honest. It was sort of ho-hum.

I looked at a number of nice books at Motor City -- the VF grade is priced at guide, but anything 9.0 and above is priced high there. But, they have such a wide selection, it's hard not to at least check them out.

Hey SS,

In case you missed my post about the Con over in General here it is, slightly edited.

I stood in line with Dave (and the con was a pleasure to experience walking around with him - his upbeat attitude and enthusiasm are infectious, and we only spent 45 minutes at lunch talking about pressing!) and got a book signed by Infantino. And let me tell you, Dave attacked his mission of getting those books signed with a very high degree of focus. It was like watching Nick Fury getting dropped behind enemy lines in order to run a night raid with the Howlers. He was in his element and enjoying every minute of it! DAMN, DAM!

Carmine was very gracious, and very happy to discuss comics with us. I mentioned that as a kid I was a 100% Marvel fanatic but as I have gotten older, and grown a career as a commercial illustrator, I have come to admire his work as very sharp, clean, and nicely composed. He said that's because he challenged himself not only as an illustrator but as a designer. And no words were truer spoken. HIs covers are gorgeous and there is a generous selection of them on the dustjacket of his book. Infantino was generous with his time with us, and it was a pleasure to meet him for the first time. He seemed well.

I didn't stay long enough to meet Joe Simon, but as I was leaving I saw him being escorted into the hall. He looked pretty dapper, and it was interesting to realize I had laid eyes on true comic book history. At my age, I can still find it easy to go, WOW! That's one of the things I like about our hobby.

I also tired setting up a beachchair next to Blazing Bob's table, feeling that some of his recent posts were a not too veiled cryout for his own posse. But he wasn't having any of it. I seem to keep spending my dough at his table. He has the goods and is so organized it's amazing. I also picked up a few Charltons from the guy next door at Ted from Superworld who was very pleasant to deal with also.

Aside from all that, Metropolis was not to be seen, and I agree with Foolkillers general assessment. Of the four big apple cons I've been to, this was the least interesting.
