ASTONISHING TALES 25 CGC 9.8 NM/NM+

24 posts in this topic

That's one of those books where the people who were collecting back then think it's a huge book, and the people who started collecting later think it's a piece of junk...

I talk to old-time collectors who have that book on their top 10 of the Bronze Age... I just shake my head...

But it is stupidly hard to find in that kind of shape...

I'd agree....Deathlok was a very cool character if you were reading comics back in the mid-70s. I proudly own a copy of his first appearance (and the whole of his Astonishing run) and wouldn't sell them for a second!

Guilty... I loved that entire Deathlok run in the 70'... guess that's why I personally like the book and character enough to bid $400+. I almost won the damn thing, and had (2) 9.6's to sell if so... a 9.6 White and the 9.6 Western Penn copy.

That said, even I (the bronze-key nut) wink.gif was always perplexed that the book was held in such high esteem as a major Bronze Key... maybe the Perez angle?

Also keep in mind there was a low supply of 9.6's for quite some time (almost 2 years into the CGC craze) and when a few started showing up, they were selling close to $300 (and over in a couple instances privately). 9.4's used to sell at $175 $225 semi-regularly. Since the "not talked about enough slow-down" the 9.6's have dropped about 40-50%.. so that makes this current 9.8 price seem worse now. 6-8 months ago.. I bet it would have went $600.

There's only (2) known 9.8's that I'm aware of now... hard to (currently) go wrong with that 9.8, even at $400. If it was White, it would have broke $500 blush.gif .. whether that seems insane or not... 9.8's are just a different ball game... just look at some of the prices other (moslty lesser) 9.8's have fetched.. Devil Dinosaur #1, Human Fly #1, Black Panther #1, Godzilla #1, 9.8...Nearly $200 to $265+. Plenty more too.

06/09/02 BLACK PANTHER 1 1 9.8 $265.00 (1976)HIGHEST GRADE! 18 2110326223

09/15/02 GI JOE 1 1 9.8 $249.99 1 713254675

07/02/02 GODZILLA 1 1 9.8 $192.50 MARVEL 1977 CLASSIC 12 2116587501

10/04/02 HUMAN FLY 1 1 9.8 $212.50 1977 BEST! 17 0718559457

08/19/02 KAMANDI 1 1 9.8 $250.00 6 2130831335

06/02/02 MARVEL SUPER HEROES SECRET WARS 1 8 9.8 $233.50 WHITE PAGES - VENOM - 6 2107712633

etc.

Out of all the comics you cite, I would have thought this would go higher than $250.00 in 9.8.

Copy that awe4one, I thought The Kamandi concept was timely and entertaining and would be more of a key book then it is. Heck it is Kirby, greatest artist of all.

I agree... a couple of those could have gone higher (and there have been some that have as I recall). I even paid $300 for a Nova #1 9.8oww a year ago because it was the only one in the census and I always wanted a 9.8 of that one too. I since found a 9.8 White for around $250. Most would not pay that much for that book but we have to remember the nostalgia factor. I had all of the Nova books when I was younger and he was in my top 5 heroes... crazy huh? He was just a recycled Spider-man with a different costume.

Prices on those 9.8's can go crazy. The recent Human Fly #1 9.8 went $175...Imagine that! Human Fly??? There was a exclusive 9.8 speculator group in particular who was buying many 9.8's of anything at top dollar...and multiples too. He (they) since sold off most at a loss and changed their ID. I'm glad they are not around to compete for the books.

Why? Up close you'll still get the whold deal... and there's an opportunity to have some real fun!!! I'd rather shave my head, call myself Lex, find a green crystal, call it kryptonite and make sure she understands she has no power to resist and must do all my biding grin.gif
