I agree it was nuts. I was blown out of the water on almost all of my bids.

I did manage to snag one item though

ST 101 CGC 7.5

But the rest just floored me like the JIM 118 CGC 9.4 Twin Cities that sold for $3883 (BP incl'd)... I'd say that sold for more than $1500 above what it should have, even for a pedigree.

There must have been a couple of big time TC collectors fighting it out over all those books!

Considering that the Northland copy of JIM 118 cgc 9.4 sold last year for $3,400, the price for the Twin Cities copy is right in line. Perhaps your sense of "should have been" is behind the current market.

The TC copy of JIM #118 is really bright, an exceptional example. I wasn't surprised by that result. The 8.5 copy of JIM 84 went for a record amount, too, but there are very few copies that come along. I'm a bit jealous of the new owners...

There were some relative bargains, too. 40% over Overstreet isn't saying much. 40% over the recent GPA price, however, is :)

Examples?

I guess I exaggerated a bit, but almost everything I bid on sold for at least 5 times guide, and lots for over 10 times guide.

Here are some examples (all were graded 9.6, and most had OW to White pages, and the majority are non-keys).

Action #333 guide $115 - sold for $1434

Avengers #15 guide $375 - sold for $3585

Batman #170 guide $300 - sold for $2390

Batman #190 guide $200 - sold for $2032

Daredevil #12 guide $200 - sold for $1544

Daredevil #15 guide $200 - sold for $1255

Detective #348 guide $110 - sold for $1792

Detective #405 guide $75 - sold for $1075

Fantastic Four #58 guide $190 - sold for $747

Fantastic Four #75 guide $175 - sold for $3346

Flash #150 guide $225 - sold for $1016

Justice League #56 guide $140 - sold for $1553

9.6 is pretty rarified air. In some cases, the TC books were top census, even the only known copy at that grade, such as this copy of ASM #4: http://comics.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=7033&Lot_No=91007

Some people were surprised that it finished at $77,675, because it was expected to go higher.

My TC pick-up was unexpectedly cheap (over 20% less than my maximum bid), almost like a rounding error to the 13 bidders chasing that 9.6. Some of those were likely just tracking bids, but still!

Some of these books would have easily gone higher, but some people had to choose their lots to focus on, I imagine. I'm extremely glad that attention was focused elsewhere, people keeping their powder dry, as it were, for some of those later lots.

i don't know about those poopie marvels but the DC's were savvy pickups. well, actually anyone that bought a Metal Men issue was out of his mind. Action was very strong in the most recent Clink auction; continued here. the tec 405 routinely goes for a number in that range (and that was a very mediocre 9.6). the flash 150 doesn't seem that extraordinary; the jla 56 does. the bat 170 and tec 348 are the only examples in grade currently residing in a slab.

Yeah, true enough. After 9.2, it's anyone's guess what 2 enterprising bidders will choose to drive the prices to. Some could use a rule of thumb and say a 9.4 should go for 2x 9.2, and look at previous sales history at that level, but other factors are up to the interpretation of the individual bidders.

Page quality seems to be the biggest driver, followed closely by how well centered a given book is, when compared to others. The Twin Cities pedigree's largest strength was the overall page quality, imo. Some people go cuckoo for white pages, paying a large premium, while ow/w is perfectly fine for most people.

The Northland copy is not on GPA so that is news to me... I was basing my "FMV" on sales that I could see. My bad apparently.

Fantastic Four #58 guide $190 - sold for $747

Fantastic Four #75 guide $175 - sold for $3346

These are the only two I can comment on--they're right in line with previous 9.6 market prices, probably a bit below what they've often sold for in the past.

I was just reading the Heritage auctions story on Gary. Anyone know what the 2 books that he sold are? One must have been a pretty big key for it to have been sold for 50 grand. Any ideas? (shrug)

was wondering that too. judging by the state of preservation of the early spideys and the conspicuous lack of a Spidey #1 in the collection.............. I'd say spidey 1
