Chasing spidey gold mine...

9 posts in this topic

To everyone

The last few months (maybe year) i've been following closely the Amazing Spider-man, Fantastic Four, Avengers and X-men silver age auctions (raw)...

I've been noticing that the price guide for the majority of these has been completly "exterminated" in the majority of the auctions:

Spidey: usually a Fine copie ends at VF, maybe VF+ price

FF: this one has been seeing the biggest increase, and not just the late silver age, but specially the early/mid bronze age that usually goes beyond the prive guide (2X or in some issues more)

Avengers: even if it still hasn't suffered from the "plague" that Spidey and more recently FF have been showing, this title have been gathering some very interesting final prices, going sometimes beyond the price guide. But it's showing it's strenght...

X-men: seems to be from the bunch the more stable on the increasing fever, will slight increases, but you still can manage to pick up a few great auctions.

What do you fellas think?!

Recently, I watched what X-men's in the 100 - 140 range have been going for, and compared to what you could buy them on e-bay about 3 years ago, final bid prices have just about doubled. I compared them to what I paid 3 years ago as I spent several months putting my run together. Now, I didn't bother checking relative to guide, but all I know is you can sell them for more than you did 3 years ago. I am sure (I think)... grin.gif

...the recent movies have something to do with it.

I agree with you. I also bought a nice Clremont/Byrne run around 4 years ago, and looking at what i paied up, makes a nice smile on my face...indeed these have gone up, but it's natural due to the rising interest on this bronze period, that's becoming equivalent to the expensive silver period, since this run is loved by many serious collectors nowadays.

But below nº100, the "re-prints" run (nº67-93) are also climbing up in a steady pace, specially the nº67-72 who i believe to be double sized, making them harder to find in great shape.

The semi keys numbers nº10,14, 27,35,50,58,66...have also doubled and sometimes tripled from the price guide in the last 2 years.

But overral, from this big 4 titles, it's FF that's going up non-stop, and the movie hype isn't really started up...i've got the feeling, everyone interested on the FF late silver and early bronze, well, this are the last few months to have a chance to have them at decent prices, without peeling of your wallet... grin.gif

I don't know about all the auctions, but so far this year I've bought several dozen books of those titles off ebay, including some from board members who've listed them in the marketplace, and have not paid anywhere close to guide for them. Now I'm not talking about NM+ books here, but most were at least Fines.Only things I've paid more than about 70% of guide for were some Spideys in the 20s and just about all the Defenders 10s I've bought.Every other purchase has left me plenty of wiggle room if(or when) the crash ever arrives.

Now,in all fairness,I win about one out of six auctions that I bid on,and rarely follow what they close at,so I may well be an exception, but I think not.

some examples:

FF 72 cost $8,guides27

FF80 cost$5 guides27

FF85 cost$5 guides9

Xmen 16 cost$14 guides 32

Xmen 56 costs$10 guides27

KS Xmen1,2 costs9 guides for32

I believe the first five books were posted in the marketplace by members. My costs include approx. shipping as I divide the shipping cost by the total amounts charged and then add the avg. cost to each book. The XMEN 16 was a medium VG,the rest were fine or better.
