Heritage Auction Scans?

Something I've wondered recently but haven't had time to ask....

 

Has anyone else noticed that Heritage Auction scans recently have the appearance of being washed out? I was going to bid on a couple of VF/NM comics they offered recently on eBay but when you look at the scans (and they are nice big scans ), they look as if the brightness has been cranked all the way to the white end of the scale. So much so that you can't see the edges of the white back covers. Is there an advantage/disadvantage to making your scans this way?

On some of them in the Signature auctions it looks like they got the flash too close or something..I'd guess it's just from a reflection of the flash, but it's just a gues.

It's not just recently, Heritage's auctions have always looked like they were scanned with the lid up under Sahara desert-intensity sunlight.
