Grimm Fairy Tales....Why?

89 posts in this topic

I suspect I already know the answer, but I'm curious about the GFT books. I have yet to read any post or hear anyone say "this is a fantastic read! You've gotta try it!" All I see is a parade of scantily clad and well-drawn women on multiple covers of what I assume are the same book(s).

Is it just the covers? If so, why not just move on to some soft core porn?

I've often wondered the same thing myself. Some of these go for big bucks around these parts. I don't collect these, but if I did I'd be worried about the long term value of my investment if people are buying them solely for the covers.

Cover collecting has a long and storied history. Alex Schomberg, Neal Adams, and Dave Stevens covers are all highly collected, despite some of the books being *ahem* mediocre on the inside. Take a look at the inside of one of the Tomahawks with a Neal Adams cover sometime.

Oh, no doubt. I collect Adam Hughes covers, so I totally understand that aspect of collecting. I do see GFT as being somewhat different, as it's not the work of a single artist, but several different artists working with similar themes. The huge stream of manufactured variants isn't my cup of tea either. Hats off to everyone who's able to get most of all of the variants to this series, because I wouldn't have the patience for it.

I've thought this for years, the same thing with Lady Death, if you want to look at porn go look at porn. If you want to read comics fine, but don't blur the two.

I had an impressive run of CGC 9.8 covers up to #26, before the excessive amount of variants, 2nd prints and reprints actually "turned me off" to it. Same thing is happening with me with IDW's Locke & Key and The Cape. I enjoyed alot of the early Grimm books, especially #1-#8, #10, #15, as decent reads too, but the rushed art inside cancelled out how good the story was. The Little Mermaid arc in the mid-twenties could have been great with better art. I haven't read a GFT book since #29 though.

The variants are part of what turned me off of Locke & Key as well. I don't mind the occasional variant, especially for a #1 issue, but I don't think EVERY issue of a series needs a variant. For Locke & Key, I thought the variants for Keys to the Kingdom were kind of lazy - same cover art with slightly different design elements. I would definitely think twice about getting into another IDW series because they, as a company, are especially variant-happy.

I was just wondering the same thing when I saw a few sales today. Crazy money because of a nice cover and low print run. Well kudos to the publisher for running with it I guess. I've considered getting a Playboy collection started hm

That should give the graders some surprises within the pages. :baiting:

But, that actually sounds like a great idea for a focus. :applause:

I have a killa' new one all mapped out(with no pointless variants that might bog down a Registry Set).

I thought the DF ones, the Head Games sketch ones, the COS ones(sans the #6 one) were lazy too. Looking back at my collection, I think IDW ruined the book's collectibility through these excess variants. What started out as a quaint variant-less series, like Grimm Fairy Tales(sans the bondage #3 and the Beanstalk one), has turned into an unfunny joke to completists. Along with creator personal reasons, the excessive variants(6 for the Cape #1) is why I'm jumping from this ship. Being a good read or not. It just feels like a 90's book now.

When is the big unveiling? I'm curious to know what your new focus will be. :baiting:

Probably, when Custom Sets get put into the system. I know I'm never gonna get a Registry Set with my intial plans, but all I can say it's gonna be big. I rather do this than worry about a book getting a mint grade or being able to afford someone's staggering price on an IDW book who gets one graded higher than mine. Let's face it, my set was starting to ressemble those Gem Mint coin commercials on TV no one wants to buy to begin with. I'm also hoping to do alot of good with it too, possibly donating the raw 9.8 rejects to boardie's kids in little bundles(hint).
