Help me out here. Perhaps I'm of a dense nature but.....why are the Japanese hanging two of their own soldiers over a...I dunno....bowl of sharks?

 

I believe they are part of the Chinese Army. It looks like the Japanese torturers have captured and are torturing those two, and the others are a squad aligned with Subby and the Torch.

 

 

The soldiers along the lower part that Subby is battling are Japanese, you can tell them apart by their five pointed star hats, while the prisoners (and presumably some of the armed insurgents) have six pointed star hats.
