Hey, GRIMM FAIRY TALES Fans...

41 posts in this topic

I quite like the amount of variants, especially the lower print run ones.

Rather than simply aiming on completing the whole GFT run, it can be broken down into mini

milestones.

I usually select an issue then aim on getting all the available variants before moving on to another issue.

It may be manufactured collectibles but I personally really enjoy the challenge.

Plus the quality of the variants far exceeds that of the variant dross churned out by the big two month on month.

Zombie variant - Yawn

Flavour of the month character variant - Yawn

Flavour of the month movie variant -Yawn

Too lazy to produce any art blank variant - Yawn

You're right, "exactly the same cover but with a different color g-string variant" really raises the bar.

Point taken

Guess I was just getting a little pissy about the flak that the title tends to get.

I know that it's not to everyones taste and I respect that. If we all read the same books we'd be inundated with spandex wearing, dark and broody zombie killing vigilantes.

In the outset, I really enjoyed the concept of the title, taking the fairy tales back to their horror roots (Yes - I actually read the words rather than looking at the covers).

I suppose on some level I agree with your arguement. The covers are now the concept and the interiors are there to bulk the book out. The writing (Pre Dream Eater) was becoming poor to the point that I didn't read any of my floppies circa issues 40 - 55. Dream Eater has tempted me back into reading them so I may revist the last couple of dozen books.

Getting back to the original point, I'd quite like to see Zenescope release a cover collection hardcover. Every issue and every variant in a nice glossy oversized HC

Just for the record, I wasn't bagging on GFT. I was just making a point regarding glass house, stones, etc. It's not a book I'm interested in collecting, but as long as there are folks that enjoy it then rock on. :headbang:

Most titles have people who don't like them... but we have to decide if the reasons are legitimate.

If the reasons are legitimate, then it's just a matter of time before the majority of people (even the buyers) have the same thoughts.

There are those who never bought them in the first place.

There are those who bought them, then got tired of all the variants and now only buy a few (saying "Yawn" to the others).

There will soon be those who bought them and finally got tired of all of it and quit buying them.

At that point, the fad will be over. That time is getting really close.

Fast-forward 10 to 20 years and it will start again, and a whole new group will buy these kinds of books thinking they're awesome...

and a lot of the people who buy them now will be trying to warn them that it's a waste of time.

And those future fans will complain about all the flak that the title gets.

Rinse. Repeat.

Funny coming from a member who calls himself "Valiantman". lol

Thanks gang. I'll dome some research for my friend. He has a handful of the single-digit issues and he wants to know which cover he has and ow much to ask for them.

Cheers!

Post em here. Those early covers (Which are actually the least "Fruity" of the series) are awesome.

If they are going up for sale, put em up the Modern sales thread. They sell pretty quick on these boards.

Like I said, legitimate reasons not to collect are the key points.

If someone has legitimate reasons not to collect Valiant, I'll listen.

These days it probably is the cover art. Debalfo and EBas seem to generate a lot of buying frenzy.

It's funny that when you look at the newer non variant covers they are usually far less gratuitous than the standard Power Girl or Zatanna covers.

I actually started reading them (Yes, actually paying attention to the words between the covers) from about issue 5 after reading a great review of the series Wizard did when promoting small press books.

Back then there were usually only first and 2nd print variants and IMHO the cover art, although less risqué was superior to many of the variants seen today.

The early stories were great little snippets of contemporary horror and obviously Zenescope used the occasional "Panty-shot" on the cover to make the book stand out on the shelves.

The book seems to have progressed to focus more on the cover art than the writing as (Prior to DES) it was borderline crud.

To be fair, most books are better than Wolverine.

I mean really, what is the attraction?

Read Uncanny X-Men 94-150 and that's all you'll ever need to know about Wolvie.

You ARE the minority. Thats an hour and a half of my life I'll never get back...

I like the way this post has moved from GFT bashing to Wolvie bashing :)

:gossip: I actually like Wolverine, Even though GFT is currently the ONLY title he doesn't feature in monthly.

A Wolverine/GFT team-up book must be on the cards now.
