That's pretty deep, but some heavy duty storage racks would have probably held up just fine. In my case I've used the top two shelves for comic storage and ensured the racks are not under any pipework. Sometimes the basement is all you have as exposure to conditions elsewhere above ground could result in a different kind of problem (i.e. heat, humidity, sunlight, kids, pets, relatives, etc.).
