Just who did they thing were reading these comics???

I was scanning a dozen or so EC books I recently obtained and in the process of scanning the back of the books, I realized that over half of them had this ad:

Did they think everyone reading comics was a bunch of wussy-boys??? Sheesh.

When I was growing up reading comics I was fairly scrawny looking, so I fit the sterotypical comic reader. Although I never even looked at those type of ads, so I guess it didn't work. 27_laughing.gif

Comics are, or certainly were, wish-fulfillment fantasies. Those Charles Atlas ads are as central to the comic reading experience as the stories inside - the company knew what they were doing and what the comic readership consisted of - and continued with such ads for three decades.
