A special trip to the shop today. The store discount goes like this: spend $100 on new or back issues in any combination over whatever period of time.... and get $20 worth of free stuff. every 100 spent equals 20 store credit.

Right now, I'm at $97.75. FREEBIE TIME!! Hmmmmm

sumo.gif I am at 48.25. I love that store

I'm a Cosmic Comics (E. 23rd Street) devotee myself. I'm known there as the wack-job who won't let the cashiers touch my comics. 893whatthe.gif

Ugh, I hate that. I feel like enough of a whacko, sifting through the 20 or so issues looking for the best one. Then I carry it around like a pizza, trying to keep it flat. The the stupid kid at the cash register flops it around, as he tries to scan the UPC, and shoves it into a bag.

Actually, if the store has fair prices and what you want, it is certainly an incentive. I used to get regular discounts fomr the comic shops I frequented in boston but you know? I spent the money on whatever. But if the store is good and you can use the percentage? I would enjoy that.

a lot of stores discount nowadays. I get 20, 20, 25 and 30 in the stores I go to. two after the fact like midtown, and one on the spot. I dont know if this applies to back issues too, or maybe it does for recent ones, since these stores never get any "interesting" back issues to buy in HG. Unfortunately, I think we all need to get 50% OFF NEW COMICS SINCE THEY ARE RARELY IN NM and worth 10 cents once you hit the street! Amazing isnt it? we pay $2.50 one minute, and once we own them, theyre worth 5% of that!! Maybe I should just buy them months later!

Well, that is why I said "Actually, if the store has fair prices and what you want, it is certainly an incentive." Mainly thinking the money you would spend on comics would stay wioth comics. But hey! What do I know? If I could buy ANY of my books for $2.50 I'd jump at it! grin.gif

do you go to midtown too??

trying to get perfect comics?

I used to go to Midtown occasionally, but Cosmic also gets many copies of just about every new issue, so I've never missed out on a hot issue (I was still picking up Conan #1s and Secret Wars #1s well over a week after release). Plus, I've offended every single Cosmic Comics employee already by not letting any of them touch my comics, so I don't have to explain myself when I go there.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the TPB revolution so I don't have to worry about condition anymore. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

they get used to it! I saw a few guys by the window in Cosmic once going thru the whole shipment looking for the perfect copies, and thought for sec it might have been you. He was a nice guy. Woulda been ironic!

btw, I finally went and looked at GIJoe 21 last night. I have a full run I bought at some point but never read them. Honestly I didnt understand the dynamic of the issue without knowing the whole story. They sneak into a forteress and save the girl, right? But I had no way of knowing if she was a girlfriend (Lois Lane) or a teammate, or a daughter.... Had a nice Janson ink look (a la Miller) though. I can definitely understand the personal significance of the book, but (and Im trying to say this in a nice way) I cab see why you feel strongly that comic art wont be on any museum walls any time soon...or in 50 years.

do you remember it as fondly as others? Having no dialogue, was it 'cool' when you read it? You must have liked it if you recall it as being your first comic. I dont remember mine, but I do remember reading Justice League#1 at summer camp (wasnt mine) and having Superman 136 (Lori Lemaris cover?) in my bookstand in my room for a long time. And a strange Ditko/Lee story that was later reprinted (to my delight) in Fantasy Masterpieces #2 I think called "Those Who Lurk Below!"

Being the first comic I ever opened I could have sworn they were supposed to have words in them! I was given a triple pack of GIJoe 21-23. After "reading" #21 I went to #22 and them #23. I was hooked and got a mail subscription after that.

Thinking back... it was a cool issue!

Well, I canvassed the store, and it was a hard fought battle between some random porn comics and the Complete Peanuts Vol.1.

porn....peanuts....porn....peanuts ----and the winner is....

Schulz won!! With the freebie it cost $9 instead of $29 (probably what it'll be going for on ebay next year). Wouldn't have bought it without Midtown's incentive plan. thumbsup2.gif
