Your Opinion Of The Most Influential Modern Comic Book Character

81 posts in this topic

Here's a different kind of speculation thread, it's based on opinions of what Modern Comic book character is gonna be the most iconic of this era from our actual enjoyment in reading.

My guess is pretty obvious... Owly.

But, seriously I've been noticing books with "everyman" Bruce Willis heroes(flawed, but dedicated) are the most popular in Moderns. So by this reasoning Rick Grimes, Yorick Brown, Tony Chu types are the most obvious choices to me in this kind of trend. I mean, it seems like our new heroes in the floppies don't wear tights, capes or hundreds of pouches on their ammo belts anymore, but are handless, cannibals and have a pet monkey. They feel more catered to the adults in the hobby.

What are your choices and opinions?

The Bone cousins: Fone, Smiley & Phoney Bone. One of the few comics out there kids are still reading and enjoying. My nephew is 12 years old and he loved Bone. All his friends at school were reading it too in the school library.

The Goon and Franky. This book already has a loyal following that keeps growing. If they ever get that movie made this will explode. 2c

Robert Kirkman's Invincible. Don't give up completely on superheros in tights. Invincible is the new Spider-Man. The best superhero comic being made today. Nuff said.

Invincible FTW. Invincible is today's Spidey. Just wait until people realize it!

Most infuential for overall media and mainstream people knowing about the character? Rick Grimes and company.

I love Incincible, but unless it gets a movie or show it will never top Walking Dead.

In due time, my friend...in due time. hm

If we are going by the numbers I'm saying Nolan's Batman. I know technically it doesn't count but the character is pretty influential.
Granted the Nolan Batman movies changed things for funny books on the big screen. But, I was going for the strictly comic book format only, to see if there is a particular trend going on where we don't get musclebound characters in spandex anymore, but ordinarily-dressed everyday heroes in extraordinary situations(a wounded sherriff in a zombie holocaust for an example). The real question is... could Rick Grimes or Tony Chu be the next Superman or Spider-Man of Moderns? Or will Hellboy, Proof and Invincible keep the fantasy element in comics intact?

I love nearly all the books mentioned here, but I'll debunk all of your guesses (in my opinion at least):

Nolan Batman - Definitely the best of the Batmans, but an actor can't replace the icon. If anyone from that franchise could, it would be Heath Ledger. His performance as the Joker will never be topped. Nolan's can.

Proof - This was one of my favorites, but it just didn't hit it off.

Hellboy - Although there are a few movies, it's not the type of character with mass appeal.

Goon - Ummm. No mass appeal. This will never be more than a small audience book.

Rick Grimes - This is a human character so you can automatically throw him out. Do we say "Bruce Wayne" or "Batman"? "Clark Kent" or "Superman"?

Tony Chu - A person. The series is going to be limited to 60 issues. That puts a cap on the ceiling.

Yorick Brown - See my reason for Tony Chu above.

INVINCIBLE FTW. Best recognize, fools!!

Bone could be a contender with it being read in schools, but still INVINCIBLE, biatches!!

:applause:

This is what I'm looking for. Honest opinions and I totally agree with your points on a series continuing to make a character stronger.

With Locke & Key, I always thought the trio of kids was hiding behind the mythology of Keyhouse, and that Keyhouse was the real main character of that series. With that series ending fairly quickly, in no way did I think that series would last in the public conscience either.

I collect vintage Nancy Drew books too. She's on her 82nd year next year(even though her newest Girl Detective series is being cancelled in March), she keeps going in the public interest(more so than Batman in many polls) as she will most likely be picked up again. Can't say that for Trixie Belden, The Dana Girls, Linda Craig, Lulu Dark, etc...

Yeah, I don't think Rick or Tony will ever reach that status. They are just mere humans, no? I thought that the whole super-hero thing, whether tights or not, was the whole point? We want people that can take us into a fantasy 'away' from reality, where we can dream. I love Rick's character, but it's just too 'real' to reach such a status. He takes us away from fantasy and takes us back to our own world. Of coarse, I don't believe in a zombie apocalypse ever happening, but there are dangers of virus epidemics, WWIII, etc. Do I want to be reminded of this reality every time I open a comic? (shrug)

from what's listed i would say invincible ...

even though i dont see him being the next spider-man . i think spider-man is so unique no other super hero comes close , people might say bat man and super-man but the way the young generation sees spider-man now it seems like he will always be the top of the list .

I love Invincible but what is missing is that villain people adore "the Venom" of the invincible world , with someone like that i think Invincible will be .A movie wont hurt either if done correctly

WIth Kirkman writing it that might just happen (The Governor i would say is a good example of that kind of popular villain) that would sell on it's own.

for the rest of you Chew is awesome , can't wait 4 the show !!!!
