Amazing Spider-Man - Memorable issues?

46 posts in this topic

So I'm sitting here going through my Spider-Man keys and a thought occurred to me - other than the Obama cover Spider-Man that came out back in 2008, has there been any other memorable Amazing Spider-Man issues that one might consider key in 10 years?

For recent issues, I personally like 655, cool cover, cool ditko-ish art inside by Marcos Martin, great self contained origin/recap story with 1st appearance of a creepy broken necked Gwen Stacy!! There aren't many modern comics I've read more than once but this is one of them.

The Obama issue and all the variants were a fad like "Hootie and the Blowfish" (1996 Grammy "Best New Artist" and 4 million albums sold)... that years from now it'll be bargain bin filler. I've already seen the subsequent printings for $1 or less.

I think the stories add substance to the books, as does the artwork, as well as 1st apperances of major characters. Not so much "deaths" since Marvel has their time machine that erases events.

I'd probably put on the list:

Issues by Steve Ditko

Issues by John Romita

Issues by Todd McFarlane

"Drug Issues, #100 & Six Armed Spider-Man"

"Death of Gwen/Goblin" (121-122)

"Kraven's Last Hunt"

"Black Costume" Issues

Of the non-AMAZING titles, I'd probably put in there:

Ultimate Spider-Man (That series was well written, including the recent Death issue)

Marvel Team-Up issues drawn by John Byrne, incl. #53 (1st X-Men art)

Spectacular Spider-Man #27-28 by Frank Miller (1st Daredevil art)

The sad thing is just about everything you listed about Spider-man keys came out more then 10 years ago.

430 and 431 have absurdly low print runs. Anything after #1 and before 32 in volume 2 also had incredibly low print runs.

Thanks

These would be some real good books to pick up for as a long -term investment.

Spider-man is the gold standard when it comes to investing in mainstream super hero modern comics.

Out of the list I made #408 all the way thru Vol.2 #29 all have pretty low print runs, you don't see them very often in comic shops.

The ones that have any kind of potential from that stretch (like the Carnage and Venom covers) more or less are already at the $15-$25 price point. Hard to call that a long term investment.

If I were to say there are any gems to be had from the modern ASM's it would be #400 (decently tough 9.8) #628 (Spider-Armor) and #649 (new Hobgoblin). The rest are fueled simply by low print run, and I don't think that makes a true investment especially with the scarcity being well known (and, truthfully, most ASM completionists already having their copies).

For spider-man print runs yes. For an overall print run none of the books are very low printed. What makes them hard to find is that there is a large collection base looking for them.

Alot of the books on here arent necessarily key books, but books that are tougher to find due to low print run or gues stars in the book. Not trying to start an argument here, but defining what a key book might be will knock out alot of books from the list I see.

For Example

ASM 437 Marvel legend copy is very hard to find, but its not a key book.

Would be an interesting argument... does a book have to be significant in terms of character/story to be key, or is being tougher to find (with secondary pricing run-up enough) enough?
