Amazing Spider-Man - Memorable issues?

46 posts in this topic

Also another book that need discussing ASM 400 News Art Cover.

Can anyone explain to me how this book is constantly listed as a newstand issue?

The book clearly has a direct edition upc. Can anyone clear this up?

It might be kind of like the Uncanny X-Men #350. Where there's a Deluxe, a Non-Deluxe, and a News Stand. There's some other books that out there that have 3 different covers. Another one I can think of off the top of my head is Wolverine #100. The ASM #400 News Stands also has a lower cover price it's $2.95 instead of $3.95 same for the Wolverine #100. The Uncanny X-Men #350 has a $3.99 Direct Edition Cover Price and the Non-Deluxe and News Stand have a $2.99 Cover Price.

Here's some scans of the X-Men #350

430 and 431 have absurdly low print runs. Anything after #1 and before 32 in volume 2 also had incredibly low print runs.

For spider-man print runs yes. For an overall print run none of the books are very low printed. What makes them hard to find is that there is a large collection base looking for them.

Alot of the books on here arent necessarily key books, but books that are tougher to find due to low print run or gues stars in the book. Not trying to start an argument here, but defining what a key book might be will knock out alot of books from the list I see.

For Example

ASM 437 Marvel legend copy is very hard to find, but its not a key book.

Absolutely in agreement. I also think that, if the speculation is based on perceived scarcity (especially for a series like ASM) odds are decent that the completionist already has most/all of these issues anyway. You really won't have a hard time finding any of them, it's just whether you want to pay $15 for some.

So I'm sitting here going through my Spider-Man keys and a thought occurred to me - other than the Obama cover Spider-Man that came out back in 2008, has there been any other memorable Amazing Spider-Man issues that one might consider key in 10 years?

The Obama cover is the farthest thing from a Memorable and Key issue as it gets!

Memorable for me in Modern age ASM would be WTC-36. As for modern Keys those would be something like ASM 299 (As Venom) and ASM 361 (1st Carnage).

One of which was released in 1988 and the other in 1992, respectively. Neither fit into the timeline of the question. I don't think I would call the Modern keys, either. I'd label them both Copper.

It doesnt answer the main question about the ASM 400 though. Why do people continually say this book is a newstand variant when it clearly shows a Direct edition tag. It doesnt have the UPC on it it says direct edition.

Some other examples that fall in the above would be like Thor 25, ASM 25, X-men 360 and a few others. They had Holo, Non Holo and Newstand.

I know it doesn't answer the question, all I was saying that maybe it's something like the issues you and I mentioned above that have 3 different covers.

Is there 2 different covers for the "Art Variant" a Direct Edition and a Non-Direct Edition? Or is there just the Direct Edition "Art Variant"?

I'd say 654 and 654.1 might have a chance to be a "key". The first new Venom with Flash Thompson.

+1 I forgot to add those 2 Issues to the list I made. I think both will be Key Issues 10+ years from now!!

I would agree (thumbs u

Thread resurrection!

I dug this thread up because I was looking at a small batch of early Volume 2 books that I picked up last year and wondered if any of them were slab worthy. Unfortunately the 36 has some color loss near the spine in a couple areas so that one is out.

Does short print run alone justify slabbing for any of the issues in twenties? It doesn't appear so for the issues in the thirties apart from the WTC issue.

There's a venom issues that is short printed that might catch fire one day.

Which ones?

The Vol 2 #19 and #22?

If they are Eddie Brock Venoms, I may check them out.

19 for sure. He's on the cover. Not sure which venom. I'll look one day.
