"Notorious" GA Covers

108 posts in this topic

The GA has its share of lurid GGA, gory, or just all around weird covers.

But which are the covers that are really, really out there on the fringes?

Just totally outrageous covers.

These are covers where your first reaction is "I can't believe they put that on the cover!"

I can think of a handfull, but there's certainly many more. My initial list would be something like:

Air Fighters 2 Japanese pilot being shot
Black Cat Mystery Comics 50 "white heat" burning guy's face off
Brenda Starr 14 classic bondage, clothes in tatters
Crime Does Not Pay 24 burning woman's face on the stove
Crime SuspenStories 22 severed head, hand holding an ax
Fight 31 decapitation cover
Fight Against Crime 20 decapitation, putting body into manhole
Giant Comics Editions 12 Matt Baker prostitution cover
Harvey Comics Library 1 AKA: Teen-Age Dope Slaves
Lawbreakers Suspense Stories 11      severed tongues
Phantom Lady 17 'nuff said
Reform School Girl sleazy gal
Suspense Comics 3 hooded figure with knife and bound woman
Underworld Crime 7 torture with hot iron

Some honorable mentions:

Air Fighters v2#2      Valkyrie's split to the waist blouse
Blue Beetle 54 famous, but a bit bland really
Claire Voyant 3 guy pistol whipping a woman
Rangers 27 GI being burned at the stake

Plain old GGA or violence doesn't cut it for this category -- For example, I wouldn't call any

of the Torchy books notorious.

cheers,

gozer

I can add a few scans - some already mentioned, some not.

This is the cover that most astonished me in the photojournal when I first saw it:

This one flew under my radar for many years, but is possibly the most disturbing cover I've ever seen:

This one has arguably the most bizarre dialogue:

..while these all seem to kind of hang together:

I don't get what's shocking about the Catman 15. Seems pretty tame.

Kitten doesn't seem very pleased. Reminiscent of the Crime Does Not Pay cover with the crooks outside a public school luring a little girl into their car. Pederasts are possibly the worst of all criminals.

I am on my phone, so I am not able to upload my scan, but I have always thought that Ditko's cover to Racket Squad in Action 12 was beyond brutal. The kid is already partially crippled, yet he and his father are being blown to bits by the bomb thrown into their Mom and Pop. Obviously a protection racket payback, but horrific nevertheless.

I need to pull my scan of Lawbreakers Suspense Stories 12 as well. I think it may be the "creepiest" cover on any book that I own. A guy keeping a dead woman that he murdered in his closet, as the moths and bugs fly around her corpse. She is obviously someone he was stalking as he is way too weird for her to have ever given him a second look. Creepy in that it could truly be real.
