Prices at the big dealer's sites

6 posts in this topic

I'm amazed sometimes at the prices for book at some of the

big dealers. Case in point - right now, Mile High has a

Planet Comics #42 for sale in CGC 7.5 -- for $1000.

Also right now on eBay, there is the _same_ book, a Planet #42,

CGC 8.0, with a BIN price of $450. Higher grade and much cheaper.

With no takers. It's been listed at least twice now (and it's tempting

at that price, IMO).

Are people paying these prices? Who is buying from folks like

Mile High, Metropolis, and PGC?

There's nothing wrong or dishonest with this -- it's a business

and those guys can charge what they like. But it makes me stop

even looking at their sites, since I've come to think I can do much better

with a little patience.

Why am I still rotting away in the second grade instead of being

skipped ahead?

Basically it comes down to content. If Mile High or other sites had books that were priced to move, they would gone and then there would be nothing left to show. All you need is a couple of sales at the higher price and that justifies the pricing for them.

"Mile High" says it all and PGC I don't even bother with. Mile High preys on the uninformed and PGC plays to the BSD caviar crowd.

I disagree with your assessment of Metropolis. I think their prices are reasonable and I buy from them regularly. They have a comprehensive selection of books in all grades and the prices are all guide or less.

>>>I disagree with your assessment of Metropolis

Point taken. Metropolis is more reasonable. Also, the previous

poster's table of info in a real shocker.

Well, I suppose I could name it the "Matlock Expressway".

I have bought from Metro several times. hi.gif

Metro has great stuff. Some of it is expensive, but not nearly as overpriced overall as Mile High. Plus, my experience is that you can trust Metro's raw grading (they are usually either dead on with my own opinion, or perhaps one grade above or below, which is really all you can ask for or expect from a dealer), and they are one of the few dealers on the web who have high grade, unrestored, raw silver age keys available that are accurately graded and that are usually priced within the realm of reason. I may pay more with Metro than I'd pay if I looked for the same book in the same grade on ebay, but I don't have to worry that I'm getting a copy with undisclosed restoration or that I won't get a refund if I want to send a book back.

PGCMint also has some great comics and the ultra high grade stuff can be really expensive, but that's true anywhere.

I have never bought a book from Mile High's website because anything I've been interested in has been priced at ridiculous levels. I've bought a couple of back issues from one of Mile High's stores though, when I found a reasonably priced back issue that wasn't totally overgraded.
