Anyone ever explain why The SPIRIT and MIDNIGHT look exactly alike, right down to the red

I've read two different stories: With The Spirit being a big hit and Will Eisner getting drafted into the army, Busy Arnold wanted a Spirit clone (at least in appearance) in case anything happened to Eisner in the war or that The Spirit was such a success that Arnold wanted a similar looking character to capitalize on it

Wasn't Cole doing art on both strips at one point?

Yes. Cole created Midnight and he, along with others, worked on The Spirit while Eisner was in the military
