Ok. So somewhere along the line sellouts and speculation were linked. I was simply talking about sellouts and not speculation driving the sellouts with creators playing for speculation.

 

The 1st title that comes to mind but may not entirely fit your question is BTVS Season 8. The manufactured collectible #1 sketch still holds value and was heavily speculated on.

 

Well, that's a variant for a book with a built in audience though.

And manufactured collectibles only bother me when they're created to increase the orders on books by Marvel and DC, who's sole purpose it is to glut the market.

Dark Horse and some of the others are just following the tired old business model of sucking the money out of as many of the already converted as they can.

Those books are generally only fought over by the hardcore collector, and it doesn't really hurt the 'readers' out there.
