33 posts in this topic

You are a rare breed my freind.

Just do me a favor, when the comic buzz has died down and the movies have lost their luster

give me a call before you sell.

Because I'll take your CGC books and crack 'em open

to be done what they were intended to be...

READ.

Whenever I go on a comic book spending freeze, you know what I like to do? Pull out the stuff I've already purchased and read it.

You mean instead of filing it away in a cool, dry, dark place and never looking at it again? WTF kind of crazy thing to do is that? 893whatthe.gifgrin.giftongue.gif

I know that this thread has gone OT, but no big deal.

The people that collect stamps do not put them on an envelope and mail them, even though that is what they were made for.

The people that collect coins do not spend them, even though that is what they were made for.

I realize that those two items were not intended for entertainment value, as comics were, but there are similarities there. Some poeple buy antique furniture but don't want you to sit on them as well. Geez, why have a 200 year old antique chair if you can't sit on it? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif ------Sid

What titles do you collect again? Some of them might be decent reads and you don't even realize it.

Oh, I bet many are great reads, no doubt about it. But to be honest, my mind wanders too much when I read. I read great, but I have a hard time concentrating. Plus I have an insane habit of needing to examine every single detail of art on a panel before moving on. Really messes with the pace of the story and is frustrating to me. I stick to magazine articles and newspapers. For me reading a comic is just too slow due to my habit 893frustrated.gif. And I get very bored reading anything lengthy. confused-smiley-013.gif -----Sid

MUST CONCENTRATE MUST CONCENTRATE MUST CONCENTRATE!!!

Seriously just concentrate on reading the book! I have the same problem Make yourself do it pick out the best character that you like best and pick a story of books and MUST CONCENTRATE MUST CONCENTRATE MUST CONCENTRATE then read it!

Once I've read a book i go back and flip throught the pictures. That way the story doesn't move to slowly and I can enjoy the art. cloud9.gif

Yeah, I'll second what Cave just said. This reminds me of something quite different, but has a similar tone. I used to have a friend who was bisexual. Lost contact with him many years ago. Anyway, I did not know of his bisexual tendencies as he had hidden his attraction for men and only spoke of women. Then one day he invited me to the beach and spilled his guts. Maybe he "liked me", I dunno. Anyway, after telling me about his feelings for men he told me that he knew that ALL guys had at least some gay feelings, but just would not admit it. Not quite. Anyway, because HE was this way, he thought that everyone else was the same way. Well..... apples and oranges but some same ideas. I absolutely LOVE these comics. To buy, sell, hang on to, look at, talk about, study, reminisce, travel out of state for conventions, debate, and hang out on these boards up to hours each day. And I'm VERY nostalgic about the whole thing. But I do not read the things and have no interest in reading the things. I've read some, but no big deal. I still love my books and want more.

So, what have we figured out? Not all men have gay tendencies and not all serious comic collectors like to read their comics. Sounds easy enough to me. 893scratchchin-thumb.gif -----Sid

But here's the difference and the fault in your analogy -- how many gay porn mags do you own?

None, obviously. Sorry but I don't get understand your point. My analogy was just pointing out that some people think that because of the way they feel, that everybody else must feel the same way. Weird analogy, but that's it.

Anyway, gotta go to work, frown.gif bye. -----Sid

Great idea FFB...but the slab is in the way foreheadslap.gif Seriously though I use "cool off" time to update my inventory, organize my collection etc. As you've indicated on other threads it is tough, and I share my empathy with your plight--I'm sure we've ALL been there at one time or another.

Wishing you the best, BassGMan

Well GMan, the fact that you've made about not ever

wanting to read your books just boggles me.

Also the fact that your not alone is painful to the extent of

someone dragging their fingermails across a blackboard.

This reminds me of something I saw on a movie once...

where in the teenage vampire flick "The Lost Boys" the Grampa

had a subscription to TV Guide but had no Television in his home.

His reply was that "I have the guide, I know what is on TV -

so there is no need to watch it".

But since "Sexual" anologies seem to be your thing I thought

of one that I felt fit the bill more closely...

I think of you guys that refuse to read your books as a

Harem leader that has the most beautiful women in the world in his Harem,

yet he does not touch them. He just watches - forever. He watches them undress, bathe

shake it round and round yet does nothing but looks! His associates try to advise him about

the ultimate pleasures that he is missing but he doesn't care...

he just sits there and says... "I like to watch" grin.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif27_laughing.gif

Cute analogy Nerf, but we all have out priorities and interests. If I had a harem of beautiful women, of course I'd be lovin', touchin' and squeezin' all day long. BUT although collecting comics is a huge interest and priority for me, actually reading them is not. I'd rather watch one of my X-Men DVDs or the Spidey DVD anyday over reading one of their books. Same goes for other great TV shows or movies. Reading comics just isn't my thing. However, I still appreciate the talents of writers, I just don't read their stories. For me personally, the cover of the book is ten times as important than the entire written story. The interior art is also important to me, but the cover is my key.

Some of you may find this bizarre but we all have our own interests. Even as a kid, I read a few comics, but not many. But at 12 years old I was still buying every comic that I could with any money that I could scrape up. Not to read, but to collect, mostly just 'cuz they're cool. -----nuff said, Sid

My point is that your analogy about your friend doesn't work here. If we were trying to convince a non-comic collector that he absolutely has to love comics, then maybe your analogy would make sense. But we are talking to a comic collector who does not like comics! That does not make inherent sense. It makes about as much sense as (to borrow from your analogy) a guy who has a large collection of gay porn, claims that he is not gay, yet complains when he does not have enough money to buy more gay porn.

But I am not trying to tell you that you can or can't be a comic collector on your own terms. My original point was that if you don't read comics and buy them only to flip for profit, then I have no sympathy for you when you are unable to buy them.

I'm mixing the contributions of several folks here.

>>>Reading comics is what it is all about!

>>>The best artist in the whole world can't carry a comic, it's the writing

>>>that makes it special

Yes and no. My favorite comics are Planet Comics from Fiction House.

And the writing is just awful -- standard space opera, and it's puerile.

So, do I read them? Yes, but once is enough. I've never gone back and

re-read one. I do go back through them to enjoy the advertisements,

letters to the editors, and interior art. But my main appreciation of them

is for the fabulous cover art.

The cover art transports me to the "gee whiz" time of 1940s science fiction.

If I want to read something of that era, I'll read a Heinlein or van Vogt

story from Astounding.

>>>if you don't read comics and buy them only to flip for profit

Well, I collect Planet Comics, I don't read them, and I don't buy them to flip.

There really are comics for which the main (only?) attraction is the art.

OK, my analogy was lame, I admit. But you FFB, as well as Nerf and a few others don't get my point. Before I go into it, I just wanted to say that I'm not looking for sympathy, just wanted to "vent" a little about my frustration of being at a stage where I have temporarily stopped buying. Certainly not something I need sympathy for.

But anyway Fantasy and Nerf, you guys are acting like, "If you don't read your comics, then why even collect them, what's the friggin' point?".

Sure, I flip some, but I've only been doing that for about two years. I've been collecting for about 25. I love these books because I am into art, the "coolness" factor of superheroes, the fun of finding hard to find books, flipping through them and looking at the "neato" panels, examining the grade of the book, talking to others about speculation, reminiscing about when I saw the books first hit the stands new, remembering when I bought them new and then traded them as a kid, putting some of my favorite covers on the wall at home, scouring Overstreet for little historical tidbits and facts about appearances of artists and creators. I do basically everything you readers do, except that I don't read 'em. But I bet ya' I'm just as attached to my favorites as you guys are to yours.

I vented earlier about not being able to buy more books at the moment. I love buying books. I love comics. Geez, reading is just one aspect of this entire hobby, sure it's a large aspect, but just one cool thing about these books. Geez, everybody has their own interests. Although I like the look of superhero comics, reading about "superheroes in tights" is not my bag. I would prefer more realistic books, but why not just watch TV or a movie instead if that's what I like? Hey, guess what? I do. I did just recently read an American Splendor comic. It was good, but I'd rather watch ten more AS movies than read 10 AS comics. Just the way I am. confused-smiley-013.gif ------Sid
