Mythology experts out there - Is this Thor with a spear?

28 posts in this topic

I acquired this large three panel fireback a few years ago.

firebackdetail.jpg

Cast by "E.T. HARRIS" (later joined by "WINSLOW") who made decorative castings for architectural applications.

Frank Lloyd Wright was supposedly a customer.

I've always wondered what story or myth is depicted on the center panel.

I thought it might be Thor, but he's holding a spear.

Anyone have any ideas about what this picture might be illustrating?

Someone suggested Poseidon, but he didn't have a winged helmet.

Anyone willing to venture a guess?

Possibly Siegfried and Brunhilde?

Wow! I think we might have the answer.

I looked it up and this is one image I found:

Looks like a match! :o

Details from the original panel...

I was thinking along the lines of... Siegfried fought with a spear, the woman's tunic seems to have an armoured quality to it, and there's a lake or ring of fire.

Maybe not mythological?

Much clearer in the new image.

The painting is of "Siegfried and Brünnhilde sequence from Der Ring des Nibelungen by the immortal Richard Wagner, 1813-1883"

Looks very close. Something to research further.

Thanks!

Do any of you guys have similar kind of objects/books/art (on mythology)?

I only have a couple of books on this, nothing worth mentioning, mainly Nordic and Japanese.

I have a few antique Griffins I've collected over the years :)
