Silver Age Comic Question

6 posts in this topic

Mainly a modern comic collector so need some help!

How many staples were in binding of Silver Age Comics? Just two or Three?

If there is only suppose to be two and a third was added should I remove it or leave it, and how would the tiny holes affect the grades?

Would they be considered qualified if staple left and universal if removed?

Thanks,

Two.

Leave them in. Not sure if you'd get a Qualified label or not.

My guess is that 3 staples would get hit less than 2 staples and holes all the way thru the book.

What is the book?

I'd check with them on what they would do in that case. If they would give a green label (I don't think they would), you can always request it to be graded universal (they will do this with Green labels) and they would just factor in the qualification to the grade.

For example, say you have a Hulk 181 with coupon cut. Typically, that will get the Green Label. But, if you ask them to grade it universal, they'll factor in the missing piece into the grade:

Hulk 181 9.4 (Green)

or

Hulk 181 6.0 (Blue)

(Please note: this is just an example. I do not know how much they'd actually deduct for the missing coupon).

The whole Green/Blue thing is also going to be dependent upon the book's condition. If it is a lower grade book I doubt there would be a Qualified as, at least originally, Qualified was created to address a high grade book with an unusual flaw. The thinking being, a single flaw in a NM book that brings ti down to say, VG or Fn is not going to have the typical accumulation of defects ordinarily found in a VG or Fn.

I still have a CGC 4.5 Universal of a Tom Mix Commandos #12. Notation reads "original staples removed. 2 extra staples added.not from manufacturing".
