My strategy would be intimidation. Just bid so freaking high on everything that it just scares all the other bidders away. Leave feedback that puts down the other bidders. Stuff like:

Not trying to argue, but whats to say they will appear again?

 

MSH #12 CGC 9.8 is a pretty tight book. It may be logical to say that one (or whatever the census says) has appeared, so there SHOULD be more out there - but no assurances confused-smiley-013.gif

Before the retraction, this NON-KEY book was going for 22.5X guide. And regardless of the retraction, the current high bidder's proxy bid is still around 22X guide.

And I suspect that this 9.6 isn't counted on the census, which means that it's likely there are 2 9.6's.

 

There are 2 9.8 copies of Marvel Super-Heroes #12, it's a key, and it's a square bound which generally are not *that* easy to find in 9.6+.

 

Am I saying MSH #12 is as rare as JIM #104? Nope. Am I saying there won't be more 9.8's? Nope. Am I saying that this is a good investment? Nope. But what I am saying is that in the current Market, 15X guide for a 9.8 squarebound key from 1967 is not THAT crazy, especially if Chris is just buying for his collection.

If this collector has the means to buy these comics, I'm not sure who would really care. What is scarier to me than a guy that buys all these comics is a "disinterested" party that would actually go through the trouble to catologue all his purchases. Why not put on a rubber glove and give him a prostrate exam while you are at it. Who knows what else you might discover. 893whatthe.gif[ Back in 2000 when the stock market was going haywire one of the discount brokers had a funny commercial. Looking to treat a patient's lower region pains, the surgeons discover that the patient actually has money coming out the whazoo..Maybe this guy has the wherewithal to buy these books and not have it impact his standard of living...Has anybody thought of that?

 

$152,886.93 for YTD through May, although $107,655.55 was for ASM #1 in 9.6 and another $9K for ASM #129. Shows good taste in being a Spidey fan, so you gotta give him that.

I'll go on record right now as saying that if I had the wherewithal to drop $175K on Doug's Amazing Spider-Man #1 CGC 9.6 Curator without it impacting my standard of living, I'd do it. Then I'd pry the Diamond Run Amazing Fantasy #15 off of whoever bought it from ComicLink in January. And I'd say go to hell to whoever didn't like it. grin.gif

 

This post is not a comment on the search of Chris' auctions (I was as interested as anyone to see the wad he has thrown down on some big books recently), and no offense is meant to my buds in this thread who are amazed by Chris' purchases. It is pretty fun to watch him go.

 

If this collector has the means to buy these comics, I'm not sure who would really care. What is scarier to me than a guy that buys all these comics is a "disinterested" party that would actually go through the trouble to catologue all his purchases. Why not put on a rubber glove and give him a prostrate exam while you are at it. Who knows what else you might discover. 893whatthe.gif[ Back in 2000 when the stock market was going haywire one of the discount brokers had a funny commercial. Looking to treat a patient's lower region pains, the surgeons discover that the patient actually has money coming out the whazoo..Maybe this guy has the wherewithal to buy these books and not have it impact his standard of living...Has anybody thought of that?

 

$152,886.93 for YTD through May, although $107,655.55 was for ASM #1 in 9.6 and another $9K for ASM #129. Shows good taste in being a Spidey fan, so you gotta give him that.

Yeah, more power to the guy. Jeez, I've got better things to do with my life than worry about a guy with more money than me buying comics.

 

These boards are littered with pretty book type threads, but when someone with the buying power to outbid us all comes along, he's treated as a insufficiently_thoughtful_person for buying said pretty books. confused-smiley-013.gif

I don't think anyone's telling him not to do it or criticizing him for spending what he does. We just want our collective intellectual curiosity satisfied by learning the motivations behind his engaging in a modern-day version of the movie "Brewster's Millions".

 

Personally, I wouldn't spend that kind of money for those books (even though I appreciate them quite a bit, particularly the mags) even if I won the next 2 Lotto drawings, but that's just me. confused-smiley-013.gif

I was thinking the same thing. I'm more disturbing by the "stalking" of the guy's purchases than the actual purchases he made. It's his money, what do I care how much he spent over the last 6 months? And why would someone go to the trouble to track down every purchase he made AND add up the amounts? That's just...weird.

 

I don't think everyone else is as obsessed, but the original poster...whew.
