CGC PLOD designations

9 posts in this topic

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere and I haven't come across it.

I noticed this FF48 that Blazing Bob has on e-bay. The top cover is trimmed and the book got a PLOD. However, the designation just says 'Apparent 9.6' with no level (slight, medium, extensive) or (A)/(P) differential.

Does this mean that trimming isn't restoration and that it is treated in some other way? If so, what are purple labels for? I thought purple was restored and green was qualified.

Any, simple, explanation of this would be appreciated.

VM,

You are correct in that this is restoration. However CGC has never made P/A or S/M/E restoration classifications for trimming alone.

I believe this is because the trimming proces by both amateurs and pros are the same, whereas other kinds of restoration like color touch and piece replacement are distinguished by A and P because of differing processes. Furthermore something like color touch can be a few dots making it slight as opposed to big blobs of color touch making the resto moderate.

Thanks.

The only thing I might add though, is that in Bob's listing he states the top edge is trimmed. This isn't mentioned on the label, so I assume he rang for the graders notes. Whilst the level differences aren't as pronounced as they are for something like colour touch, since there are up to 3 edges that can be trimmed, CGC might make mention of this somehow. With only one edge trimmed, the book should be more desirable than if all 3 edges had been cut?

Actually, if you look at the label unde where Fantastic Four 48 is written and right above "white pages" it says Top edge trimmed.

Trimming,,,,,, The worst form of resto, no words, neither slight nor pro will describe what has been done to a book that is trimmed.

my eyes, MY EYES

If only the overhang was trimmed that's not so bad.

It shouldn't be there anyway.

But when the book is cut into when they try to remove marvel chipping, that is 893censored-thumb.gif893frustrated.gif.

True, but in this case it's very minor. If Bob is to be believed, he hadn't noticed it himself and he must be a resonable judge. I'm not a Marvel collector, but if I wanted an FF48 in 9.6 and I had a choice between this one (possibly going for a song) and another going at whatever the current GPA is, I know which I'd choose.
