Art Adams ????

I'm not a member of ComicArt-L. CGC is not affiliated with ComicArt-L.

If this is already a hot topic on ComicArt-L, I'm surprised that no one has posted a thread about it. Can you do so and I'll see if I can have the moderators delete this thread?

Thanks

N.

Hey Nelson,

Sorry, thought you were. The warning should be everywhere, so having posts here and comicart-l is good. And this should be in the main board instead of marketplace.

Basically a guy was offering to sell privately some Art Adams sketches of Batman, Black Canary, Longshot and others and an astute person checked and saw exact same scans on CAF and other places.

Buyer beware!

One note, Google's image search is really good at helping with this.

Go to http://images.google.com, drag your jpg to the search box, drop it and Google will find images that match. It's pretty amazing. I found that someone had inked and colored my Curt Swan that way.

WOW, very cool feature. Thanks for pointing this out :golfclap:

The person (who is actually a boardie!) that posted the initial warning doesn't have time and he said feel free to repost so here it is:

------------

FYI -- heads up on some artwork for sale purported to be by Arthur Adams.....

please read below.

I was able to confirm that the Black Canary piece on CAF is still owned by the

CAF lister.

Draw your own conclusions....

My questions to the same individual were very similar to Brauny's. I still have not received a response.

Here is my e-mail:

======================================================

Joshua

1) Did you purchase the Black Canary piece directly from Art Adams or his agent? If not, where was it obtained from?

The reason I ask is the Black Canary piece looks virtually identical to an original piece in a private collection. The private collector still has possession of his Black Canary piece. He bought it directly from Art's agent. I have a scan of his. Art doesn't do line for line recreations of his specialty pieces either. You're going to have a tough time selling this if it can't be authenticated.

2) The Batman - If you got Art to do this as a commission for you at SDCC, why is it dated 10-24-97? SDCC is only held in summer months.

Cheers!

Nelson

The ebay auction is one of the drawings I questioned as suspect.

The individual used the e-mail of "artistorms@gmail.com". The ebay ID, with zero feedback, is using "artistorms2012" so I would say it's the same person.

I still have not heard from Joshua DeLava since I questioned him.

If you search the name, there is an "aspiring comic book artist / digital colorist" based in California. IMO, if it's the same Joshua, he essentially killed any chance of a career in the comic book industry.

Has anyone contacted Art Adams or his agent John Fanucchi?

I heard back from John Fanucchi. He asked why I thought they might be fakes. My reply was as follows:

Hi, John.

To be honest, I'm no expert. In fact, I really haven't a clue. I have exactly one piece of Art's work (Grogg!) from Houston's Space City Comic Con and I know he did that one 'cause I saw him ink it. :)

However, a number of people on the CGC OA board and the comicart-l Yahoo list have indicated that they believe that they are copies of work on various websites and are so similar as to be unlikely that Art did them.

Mike Burkey's Batman - http://www.romitaman.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=9089&ArtistId=840&Details=1&From=Room

eBay Batman (attached) and here: http://www.romitaman.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=9089&ArtistId=840&Details=1&From=Room

You can see the dates: 10/24/1987 and 10/24/1997. This seems quite odd.

One other point, I did a google search of the eBay image and it gave me one match - Mike's site. This indicates that the images are quite similar.

Anyway, here's the link to the entire CGC OA thread: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5995872#Post5995872.

The particular post of note is: http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=5995872#Post5997521

If you are a comicart-l Yahoo list member, you can see the thread there at this link: http://dir.groups.yahoo.com/group/comicart-l/message/339099 and follow the responses.

I think those that doubt the validity of these pieces would accept your judgment.

  • If you bless them, the seller will benefit.
  • If you say no, you can have them removed since Art holds the copyrights and the OA community benefits.

Anyway, thanks for you consideration.

So, the appropriate folks have been notified. They can decide the right thing to do.
