Watch yourself when you go into other people's towns, specifically your snake count. If someone doesn't have their initial license yet, you'll lose between 5 and 10 snakes from your total upon entering. However, they're immediately released into the town you just arrived in so you can get most of them back (unfortunately, some will give you eggs).

 

I'm guessing it's just a program bug that hasn't been updated yet. Add me if you have room: stutkah. I have nearly 400 eggs just sitting in my account.
