Something I have never understood about auctions is the term "won". What did we "win"? The privelege to pay the most money?

 

Does anyone else feel really weird about "winning" an auction they had to spend more than any other bidder to finalize? It just makes no sense.

Semantics....I think you won the opportunity to pay for an item that you otherwise would not have been offered had you not put up the highest price.

Ahhh - ok - so you are basically saying I "won" the opportunity to pay more than anyone else was willing to pay?

Exactly. Don't forget to add the words "for something you really want" after your statement and it all makes sense.
