Star Wars - New 2013 Ongoing from Dark Horse

I need to catch up on this. I think I got a little disgruntled when I heard Marvel was taking over the franchise. This is about as good as Star Wars comics get imo.

I haven't read #13 but looking through it, I saw Vader straight get medieval on some poor schmucks head/face. Hope that is not a spoiler.

Is it that none of the Dark Horse stuff is canon ? What about the novels and old Marvel comics ?

Basically anything that wasn't depicted or explained in the first six movies is now null and void, unless they choose to adopt it as canon. They are free to keep or discard whatever they want as long as it gels with what happened in episodes 1-6. At least that is my understanding.

That's what I read but wasn't sure that I was reading it correctly. Kind of a bummer imo. It took me years to accept the expanded universe as canon and now I'm back where I started.
