Finger Prints

4 posts in this topic

Are there different types of finger prints. For example when a comic is picked up for whatever reason during the printing process and the inks smudge and prints are left the same as someone who leaves finger prints on a book while eating BBQ chicken wings.

Is one considered production and the other a defect?

Can books with finger prints get green labels?

Thanks,

NooburnallMAbks.

P.S. Can finger prints be dry cleaned?

It all depends.

If the inks have been smudged...no. Dry cleaning will make it worse.

Oils and inks that lay on the surface of the book can be gently cleaned and in some cases entirely be removed. Again, this depends if the oils have had a chance to stain the book or not and if the inks have bonded due to greasy or oily prints.

Fingerprints are usually hit hard by CGC. Keep in mind a smudge by a finger print is different than speckling or ink that was applied incorrectly during the printing process. They will always be considered a defect.

Just say you've got a clear 9.6 but it has a thumbprint on the front cover - a black front cover - are we talking a grade drop of two to three grades?

Down to 9.0 or even 8.5? Very possible. All depends how bad the print is.
