Was at my shop today with a friend and saw that they had #1(2nd print) and #2. Picked them up because of all the wonderful posts in this thread and because Ken takes the time to come and interact. Just read them and loved it :cloud9: I"ll be adding it to my pull-list.

Wow. Not cheap. So when you decide you're going to make that investment is it usually because you think you can sell that book and make a certain margin? What's the magic number?

Depends on if it comes back a 9.8 or higher, they are tough to get in high grade on any comic. If you spend the money to get the book graded, you're basically "rolling the dice" at the casino or scratching that lottery ticket. You never know how much you get, like drawing a comic for a living and selling it. You advertise Todd #1 to comic stores and cross your fingers, hoping stores order enough you at least break even, anything after that is gravy.

Not if you have a good eye.

I went 10 for 10 on 9.8s on my last order, it just takes a careful eye and patience.

Ahh, PGX. Something else I need to know about. What's the diff btwn PGX and CGC?

CGC is the most trusted grader in the business. PGX has a lot of stigma attached to it. It may be CGCs only competitor but no one really trusts there grading.

I read this this morning. Funny stuff. Did you guys bring in a consultant, or did you have to go undercover onto the front lines?...Or how long were you in prison for?

lol, i love whenever this is brought up. On the modern forums it shouldnt get too heated, not like the old days anyway.

PGX and CGC were competing companies trying to capture the "third-party grading" market for comics. PGX was slammed for its owner, and an ebay user that got caught altering books but not having the grading company grade it as such.

CGC used to get slammed for having not as strict grading standards (higher grades).

In the end, CGC won, PGX offers lower fees so people still use it, but the books sell for much less on the secondary market and they now grade looser (higher grades) than CGC abandoning the only sort of ground they ever held years ago.

People here exaggerate the grading differences, but CGC definitely is stricter now with 9.8s and above. Especially on 9.9s and 10.0s

With older PGX books people fear undeclared restoration, with newer ones they fear the grades are worse than stated. That pretty much sums it up.

Interestingly enough, if you look at Walking Dead #1, the margin of difference between a PGX 9.8 and CGC 9.8 is MUCH smaller than any other 'HOT' modern. So an argument could be made, that buying PGX 9.8s/9.9s of hot books for way less might lead to a nice arbitrage down the road.
