That's right, the first print appearance of The Tick! Put up a new post about it today, on my Copper Age blog...

 

...anyone else like me, you DID have it when it was originally mailed out to NEC's list in 1986, and then (greatly regretted) throwing it away, in the window of time before the actual regular series comic came out?! Oy.

 

New England Comics Newsletter #14 does come up on eBay here and there...also pretty rare are the subsequent early Tick appearances in Newsletter #15 and #16. Have seen #14 go for anywhere between $150 and $1000.

I had all the newsletters when they came out, and used to laugh at the character. Then, I threw them all away once I had the comics.

Who new a newsletter would become so valuable? That's why it is worth so much now.

Right, a really good parallel to say comics from the Golden Age, "Who would've thought?"

 

So few of them were preserved well, so many of them trashed...and then when nostalgia meets legitimately scare surviving supply...

I was lucky enough to find one on eBay not too long ago for under $100. Not the best condition, but still happy to find a copy to add to the collection at a reasonable price given how rare these are. What makes this interesting is that I'm sure many copies have the address labels on them since they were mailed. How does that impact the value?

Ahhh, so YOU were the one who outbid me for that copy of it!

 

Actually, I can't remember if I was bidding on that copy or not, but def remember it, with the cover blotches...which to me are no big deal, as we've both said, it's rare in any grade.

My favorite part is that it tells all you people who received this newsletter "Save your NEC Newsletter #14! Why? Becuase it features the first appearance ever of the Tick!!"

 

I guess a lot of people didn't follow instructions...
