First up is the most handsome collection of Steranko art ever produced: STERANKO: ARTE NOIR, published in 2002 by Vanguard Productions (Steranko's agent and publisher).

In the publisher's own words:

"STERANKO: ARTE NOIR is the largest and most comprehensive collection of the controversial creator's work ever published, packed with classic, new, and rare art, including hundreds of color and B&W images spanning the full range of his career-from comics to book covers, trading cards to limited-edition prints, film production illustrations to movie posters-many never before compiled in book form.

The hefty 8 x 10" volume features 200 pages of Steranko visual magic in a high-quality, perfect-bound deluxe format, printed on 80-pound coated matte stock with a heavy, full-color, laminated card stock cover with flaps, and housed in a hard-surfaced leatherette, crimson-foil embossed slipcase. Each copy has been personally autographed by Steranko."

_________

Of course, this copy is autographed as you can see in the photo I have included below. This book was printed in Spain and included both Spanish and English text. Only 3000 copies of this book were printed and they are long sold out. This is a solid VFNM copy, with only very minor nicks to the slipcase and very very minor wear on the book due to being pulled out of the slipcase. All copies of this book that were printed had minor wear straight from the factory, as acknowledged by the publisher.

Includes unpublished work and fantastic reproductions of published work, including the entire Chandler: Red Tide graphic novel reproduced in stunning black & white (final photo in set).

UNSEEN SHADOWS (Supergraphics, 1978)

This scarce book details Steranko's multi-year odyssey to illustrate the 27 different painted covers that he created for the Shadow paperback series between 1975 and 1978. Completely written, designed, illustrated and published by Steranko in 1978. This is a seldom seen gem.

Unseen Shadows contains 50 pages of pencilled prelims for each cover, some paintings have multiple prelims. Not reprinted in any other volume! A beautiful book for a fan of Steranko's amazing Shadow paintings. Full color covers with b&w interiors. Cardstock cover without tanning usually seen in copies of this book. Pages and cover are not tanned at all. Very minor wear at top and bottom of spine. Very small ink mark on title page. Very flat, beautiful cover colors. Otherwise solid VF or VFNM. Killer book! Best copy I've ever had. Look at these cover colors!

Let's see if anyone is paying attention...

File these under "rarities"...

"You have never seen the likes of me before!"

This is a complete set of the four very rare alternate covers that Steranko did in 1977/1978 for the reprintings of Shadow #1, #9, #11, #12 for Jove. These were produced in a much lower quantity than the regular covers, by a wide margin. I have never seen a complete set of these for sale before. I can provide a more comprehensive condition description of these books if you're interested.

$200 for all four NOW $185

CHANDLER: RED TIDE by Jim Steranko, 127 pages, FULL SIZE 8.5 x 11"

Pyramid Books 1976

This is the classic, magnum-opus work by Jim Steranko, CHANDLER : RED TIDE that was published in 1976 which was written, pencilled, inked and colored by Jim Steranko. Considered groundbreaking, and highly influential, it is Steranko's longest self-contained graphic storytelling work. It is some of Steranko's best work in any medium. There were two versions of this book, one a digest size, published by Byron Preiss on lesser-quality paper, and this one, the scarce, special-order-only full size 8.5 x 11" that was printed on much higher-quality paper. This is the much harder to find version. Chandler : Red Tide is the ultimate published work by Steranko in its intended full-size with bold colors.

Fine condition with white pages. No writing in interior or on cover. Very minor wear on covers, a few light cover creases and a bit of wear at top and bottom of spine and middle of spine. About ten pages are nicked/chipped at top middle and does not impact page illustrations or text, otherwise pages are in excellent condition. Really, really tough to find a top condition copy of this book.

This copy is a good deal at $75 and an even better deal at $59

Next up is the auto-biographical Graphic Prince of Darkness that Steranko designed and produced in 1997. This book is full of art that had never been released before or since including:

Pencils to a never published story in the "Stroke of Midnight"-style that was intended for Marvel

Original cover to Tower of Shadows #1 that was never published

Storyboards for Coppola's Dracula

and many more... and a ton of unbelievable and outrageous biographical material. This is a must-own for any Steranko fan.

I have three strict NM and unread copies of this long out-of-print book. 32 pages, comic-book size.

$25 each ALL THREE COPIES SOLD

Steranko did two covers for the Marvel Comics index series by George Olshevsky in 1979 (published by Marvel). The Fantastic Four cover that Steranko produced for this series has never been reproduced in full size anywhere else. Most fans don't even know this cover exists due to scarcity. In addition, it's an amazingly detailed resource for information about the Fantastic Four series. Book is 8.5" x 11" and in VF+ condition with only a bit of rubbing on front and back cover. This is beautiful copy of a seldom seen book. Pages are bright white, no creases, no tears. Book is flat, glossy and has super color as you can see in the photos.

Here's the legendary Steranko Cap issue:

The Captain America issue is very scarce and features the first printing of what is the best image of Captain America that Steranko ever produced (anyone ever produced?), in glorious wraparound color! 8.5 x 11" in size! That makes the wraparound cover 8.5" x 22" ! The largest cover that Steranko ever did. Interior is an amazing index resource of Tales of Suspense, Golden Age, Silver and Bronze Captain America.

This copy is in VF+ condition with only a bit of rubbing on front and back cover. This is beautiful copy of a seldom seen book. Pages are bright white, no creases, no tears. Book is flat, glossy and has super color as you can see in the photos. Only a few very small cover nicks and a small bindery tear at base of spine. Bottom corner very slightly bumped. Very light 1cm crease top corner. This is as good as you are going to find for this book. Killer Cap image by Steranko! If you are looking for a top example of this scarce book, this is it.

SOLD!

Back to the Jaunty Jim archive...

This is a copy of the super rare STERANKO ON CARDS, first 1960 printing. SIGNED by Jim Steranko.

Entire 102 page book was designed, written and illustrated by Steranko when he was only 22 years old. Includes Steranko photo on cover. This book is legendary among card magicians and very sought after.

This book is in very fine condition. Pages are very nice. It was printed with a clear plastic front and back cover and a plastic comb binding. Clear plastic is turning darker in some areas. Plastic comb is broken in one spot, but doesn't affect readability.

Super scarce.

Is this mic on?

How about this one...

The earliest biography/interview ever done on Jim Steranko. Featured in a scarce magazine well prior to his Harvey and Marvel comic book years, and mentions pre-Harvey comic book work! Discusses his magic career up to that point in-depth. Biography is two and a half pages long. Lots of information you'll never find anywhere else. I believe this magazine features the first photograph of Steranko in a national periodical. Magazine is complete and in NM condition.

$80 NOW $65

This looks like a pretty good deal. I sold my OO set of 1-20 in about the same shape to a dealer 15 years ago for $5 apiece. Brings back memories of checking the book store the new one every month or so.
